7 INTRODUCTION CHAIR’S MESSAGE Building Our Industry and Communities Dear ABC New Mexico Chapter Members, It is my honor to serve as the 2024 ABC New Mexico Chapter board chair. I am grateful for your membership and contributions in helping make this the voice of the merit shop construction industry in New Mexico. Our industry is experiencing prosperous times with strong volumes, healthy backlogs and steady growth; however, we are also facing challenges that demand our attention and action. Shortages in the availability of skilled tradespeople continue to be a concern for our members, and the political and policy landscape we are living in threatens to undermine the way we operate our businesses. I urge you to stay involved and connected so that we can continue to build our industry and communities. ABC New Mexico continues to be the leader of our industry in political advocacy, workforce development and safety by engaging our community, leaders and members in thoughtful and impactful ways.Today, we can boast ABC New Mexico as having the largest construction apprenticeship program in the state with over 325 registered apprentices. Our membership is approaching 190 members strong, which is the highest number for our chapter ever; our members continue to show their commitment to safety by participating in STEP and the CLAS OSHA partnership programs, and we are the leading advocate for the merit shop philosophy when it comes to policy and legislation issues. Thank you to Carla and our chapter staff, our board of directors, our instructors, apprentices and, most importantly, our members for shaping our association into what it is today. You all should be proud of the accomplishments and the direction of our association. Let’s keep pushing forward, and I hope you all have a successful year in 2024. Sincerely, Mason Karnas Chair, ABC New Mexico I urge you to stay involved and connected so that we can continue to build our industry and communities.

17 Advocacy
18 ADVOCACY One Powerful Voice Today, more than ever, it is important to stay informed and involved in the political landscape. From voting for leadership that understands our industry to supporting legislation that protects the Merit Shop Philosophy, each of us must do our part. With over 21,000 members and 69 chapters, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) understands that together, our one powerful voice has the ability to advocate and affect change. That is why every member should download the ABC Action app. The ABC Action app is a complete suite for everything members need to know about the association’s advocacy efforts and how they can get involved. “It’s like a handheld version of our ABC Action Center, but it’s tailored to our specific issues and the individual,” says Patrick McCarty, grassroots manager at ABC. “It’s how we help build engagement, our mobile ABC Action app.” “The app is an advanced advocacy tool that enables ABC members to become a vital part of the association’s grassroots advocacy efforts and allows you to make your voice heard,” says Ben Brubeck, vice president of regulatory, labor and state affairs at ABC. “Through the ABC Action app, users can take action in grassroots campaigns and push for pro-Merit Shop legislation in Congress and state capitols, check out state-specific policy information in the Merit Shop Scorecard, and access a custom X (formerly Twitter) feed tracking issues important to our membership and the construction industry.” When users download the ABC Action app, they create a profile where they enter their personal information, including their home or business address. This information is automatically matched in VoterVoice to return a personalized experience for the users that connects them with their elected officials and also shows them any active federal or state campaigns they can participate in. The app also pulls all elected officials’ headshots and contact information (including the option to call them or visit their website and social media accounts), maps of office locations and information on how they voted on ABC’s key issues based on VoterVoice’s scorecards. “We use the VoterVoice API and its grassroots functionality for our members to get in touch with their federal and state elected officials with just a few clicks,” says McCarty. “The ABC Action app, in addition to VoterVoice email alerts, is how we primarily drive participation for advocacy efforts, from a national perspective down to the chapters.”

It can adjust project plans based on the information it receives, allowing decision-makers to alter those plans or change them to improve safety or minimize inefficiencies. AI can enhance productivity, reduce costs, improve safety and promote sustainable practices, making it a vital tool for the industry’s future growth and development. The possibilities may sound endless, but as an industry traditionally looking from the outside in at technology, we must first step back to educate ourselves on the basics. This resource is meant to act as a starting point in your journey to understand AI and its potential impact on the construction industry. By reading through definitions, construction use cases and considerations, the reader should walk away with a level of knowledge to ensure they can actively participate in future conversations on AI in construction. DEFINITIONS Artificial Intelligence: PerThe National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020: “A machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations or decisions influencing real or virtual environments.” Machine Learning: Application of AI that allows a system to automatically learn and improve from experience. In other words, machine learning helps computers do tasks like recognizing colors, finding pictures of cats on the internet or even suggesting what to watch onTV. It’s like teaching the computer to be smart and make decisions by looking at lots of examples and learning from them. One common example of this is the Large Language Model. Deep Learning: Per IBM: “Deep learning is a subset of machine learning, which is essentially a neural network with three or more layers. These neural networks attempt to simulate the behavior of the human brain — albeit far from matching its ability — allowing it to ‘learn’ from substantial amounts of data. While a neural network with a single layer can still make approximate predictions, additional hidden layers can help to optimize and refine for accuracy.” Deep learning has achieved remarkable success in various applications, including self-driving cars, medical diagnosis, recommendation systems and more. Its power lies in its ability to automatically learn and adapt to new data, making it a cutting-edge technology in the field of AI and data analysis.
32 TECHNOLOGY Generative AI: A type of AI that can create new data or content, such as images, text, music or even videos, by learning patterns and structures from existing examples. It works by understanding and mimicking the patterns and styles it has seen in the data it was trained on.The most publicly recognized tool in the last year is ChatGPT, built by the company OpenAI. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that can process natural human language and generate a response. It has revolutionized how we interact with computer systems and has influenced the evolution of AI. Additional generative AI tools from other major technology companies include: Meta’s Llama 2, Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s PaLM 2, Amazon’s Bedrock and Dall-E 2, also from OpenAI. Predictive AI: A type of AI that uses data and machine learning algorithms to forecast future events or trends. It helps businesses and organizations make informed decisions by analyzing historical data, identifying patterns and making predictions based on those patterns. TOP 10 WAYS TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY WITH AI 1. Generative Design and Planning: Generate multiple design alternatives and optimize project plans. 2. Predictive Analytics for Risk Management: Predict potential delays, cost overruns and other risks. 3. Smart Equipment and Asset Management: Implement AI-driven asset tracking and maintenance systems. 4. Autonomous Vehicles and Robotics: Explore AI-powered drones, autonomous vehicles and robotic construction equipment. 5. Quality Control and Defect Detection: AI algorithms can detect defects in construction materials, structures and finishes. 6. Supply Chain Optimization: Optimize material procurement, logistics and inventory management. 7. Energy Efficiency and Sustainability: AI can analyze building designs and recommend energy-efficient solutions. 8. Safety Monitoring and Compliance: AI-powered cameras and sensors can monitor construction sites for safety compliance. 9. Performance Analytics: Analyze project performance data using AI. 10. Document Management Automation: Automate document sorting, indexing and retrieval, streamlining communication and ensuring easy access to critical project documentation. Remember, adopting AI tools strategically can revolutionize the construction industry, leading to better outcomes, reduced costs and safer processes. To learn more, please visit www.abc.org/Technology/AI-Resource-Guide.
