20 EDUCATION Apprenticeship Programs ABCNM apprentices earn competitive wages and benefits while working on the job. An apprentice’s wages are based on a percentage of the journeyperson rate for public works projects or a wage survey for non-public works jobs. Classroom and on-the-job training requirements are based on the length of the program. Ƚ Four Year Program is 8,000 on-the-job training hours and 576 classroom hours. Ƚ Three Year Program is 6,000 on-the-job training hours and 432 classroom hours. CARPENTRY PROGRAM Carpentry is a skilled trade and a craft in which the primary work performed is the cutting, shaping and installation of building materials during the construction of buildings, ships, timber bridges, concrete formwork, etc. Carpenters traditionally worked with natural wood and did rougher work such as framing, but today many other materials are also used. ELECTRICAL PROGRAM An electrician is a tradesperson specializing in electrical wiring of buildings, transmission lines, stationary machines and related equipment. Electricians may be employed in the installation of new electrical components or the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure. HVAC PROGRAM An HVAC technician is a tradesperson who specializes in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. PLUMBING PROGRAM A plumber is a tradesperson who specializes in installing and maintaining systems used for potable (drinking) water, and for sewage and drainage in plumbing systems. SHEET METAL PROGRAM A sheet metal journeyperson is part of a highly skilled and diversified trade. In the shop and on the job site, sheet metal journeypersons are responsible for the fabrication, welding and assembly of HVAC systems, duct work and architectural projects and building exteriors — all from raw materials. TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN PROGRAM The telecommunications technician is responsible for installing, maintaining and servicing a variety of telephone equipment, and installing voice and data communication circuits, security cameras, panic systems, door access and cabling.
