Practicing for the surprises is just as important as practicing for the primary event. Five Steps to a Successful BCP Test “ Give aman a fish, and you feed him for a day; show himhowtocatchfish, andyoufeedhimfora lifetime. ” T his old proverb speaks to the heart of education. When employees don’t know which part of the business continuity plan applies to them or don’t understand your writing structure, they invalidate even the best of BCPs. You must teach them to sustain themselves, and you can so with BCP testing. To help you with the teacher-side of things (just in case your skill set lies more in IT or compliance and less in training), here is a tem- plate for a full-scale interactive BCP test. You should be able to manipulate this template for any kind of group test. With the steps below, I’ve provided some examples froma large scale BCP Test Simulation I coordinated for our last company conference. Choose your Scope, Scenario, and Participants You can limit scope to a particular loca- tion, process, or scenario. Each will result in a different style of response and each will flex different BCPmuscles. For amoremanageable and less disruptive test environment, work with a small subset of employees, perhaps those who would be leaders in the event of a
