2026 Key Leader Honoree Jimmy Bass During the September Board Meeting in Washington, D.C., TADA board member Jimmy Bass of Jim Bass Ford, Jim Bass Mazda and Jim Bass Nissan was honored as the 2026 Key Leader. Jimmy is a third-generation dealer with extraordinary leadership, quiet generosity and a lifetime of dedication to his community. His story began nearly three decades ago, back in 1996. After finishing college up north in Pennsylvania, a young Jimmy Bass packed up his life, hitched a U-Haul trailer to his Ford Bronco II and pointed his steering wheel toward his family’s dealership in Texas. This Bronco II wasn’t just any standard vehicle. It had massive, oversized tires on it. They were so big that his grandfather took one look at them, shook his head and warned him that those tires were an absolute rollover risk. But with determination in his heart, and thankfully without rolling over on the highway, he made it safely to his destination. When Jimmy arrived at his family’s multi-line dealership, he did not start in an executive office. He started at the very bottom. He worked in the parts department — stocking shelves and learning the business from the ground up. Later, he moved over to the wash rack, scrubbing vehicles in the Texas heat, which turned out to be the best career move he ever made because he met a special young woman who would become his wife of 28 years. Around that same time, as a fresh transplant to Texas, he decided to embrace his new surroundings in a unique way by buying a horse from a colleague. This immediately prompted everyone at the dealership to ask, “What in the world is a Yankee doing buying a horse?” He ended up selling the horse, but the lesson was clear: Jimmy was never afraid to dive into something new. Jimmy spent time working in almost every single position across the dealership. Over time, he became the ultimate Mr. Fix-It. His grandfather always deeply appreciated his ability to repair anything that was broken. If there was a problem to solve, he would find a way, even if it meant going down a deep rabbit hole until he figured it out. That problem-solving mindset extends far beyond business, as it truly defines how he cares for his family. During the 2008 financial crisis, a challenging era for business owners across the nation, he demonstrated what true sacrifice looks like. He traded in his own vehicle for a used Ford Aerostar minivan, putting his family and his business above any personal vanity. DEALERS’ CHOICE 6
