In summary, Jessie Sather, president of the Montana Coroner’s Association, has had conversations with both Sen. Mike Yakawich and Rep. Denise Baum about the challenges facing coroner offices in the state. Of major concern has been the issue of indigent dead and the financial strain that this poses to these offices and their counties. MCA 7-4-2924 declares the existence of a state indigent burial fund, but remains silent regarding its funding sources, except for private donations. A possible remedy might be to divert any board overage to the state indigent burial fund, thereby providing these services. This is only conceptual at this point, and many questions need to be addressed, but the board looks forward to working with Sen. Yakawich, Rep. Baum and the Montana Coroner’s Association to bring this to fruition. Board member Denis Pitman has volunteered to serve as a liaison with the senator and representative, as he knows both of them. This will definitely be an item on the board’s agenda for its next meeting. The board’s quarterly meetings for the coming year will be held Feb. 10, May 5, Aug. 4 and Nov. 3. It is a privilege to serve on this board, and I welcome any questions, concerns or comments from MFDA members.
