Following one of the busiest days at the polls in the history of New Hampshire, we are pleased to provide you with a summary of the results. Your participation in these elections helps shape the future of our nation, state and our industry. Here are the highlights: NEW HAMPSHIRE HIGHLIGHTS Republicans gained two more seats in the already GOP-controlled State Senate, establishing a 16-8 supermajority. Notably, they flipped Democratic seats in Districts 11 and 18, defeating Senate Minority Leader Donna Soucy of Manchester. This Republican surge continued in the House of Representatives, where the GOP secured over 220 seats, solidifying a strong majority for the next two years. NHADA’s long-time friend and supporter Representative Sherman Packard has been elected as the Speaker of the House once again. This election secured Republican control across all three state governing bodies, providing Governor-Elect Kelly Ayotte with the backing necessary to effectively pursue her policy agenda. PRESIDENTIAL RESULTS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE • Winner in State: Kamala Harris (Democrat) • Results: Kamala Harris received 418,488 votes (50.9%) and secured 4 electoral votes from New Hampshire. Donald Trump (Republican) followed with 395,523 votes (48.1%). Other candidates included Chase Oliver (Libertarian) with 4,225 votes (0.5%) and Jill Stein with 3,680 votes (0.5%). Overall Presidential Results Kamala Harris had a total of 226 electoral votes across the U.S., while Donald Trump had 312 electoral and was elected as the 47th President of the United States. He will be inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2025, at the U.S. Capitol. U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES District 1 • Winner: Chris Pappas (Democrat) a long-time NADA and NHADA ally and advocate for the heavy truck industry, won re-election, defeating Russell Prescott (Republican) of Kingston. • Results: Chris Pappas secured 218,577 votes (54%) against Russell Prescott (Republican), who received 185,936 votes (46%). District 2 • Winner: Maggie Goodlander (Democrat) of Nashua has been elected to serve her first term as New Hampshire’s Representative in the Second Congressional District, defeating Lily Tang Williams (Republican) of Weare. • Results: Maggie Goodlander obtained 211,641 votes (53%), defeating Lily Tang Williams (Republican), who received 187,810 votes (47%). GOVERNOR • Winner: Kelly Ayotte (Republican) of Nashua was elected as the 83rd Governor of New Hampshire, defeating Joyce Craig (Democrat) of Manchester. Ayotte, supported by NHADA MVPAC and the New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Industry, previously served as Attorney General (2004-2009) and U.S. Senator (2011-2017). • Results: Kelly Ayotte received 436,122 votes (53.7%), defeating Joyce Craig (Democrat), who garnered 360,149 votes (44.3%), and Stephen Villee (Libertarian), who received 16,202 votes (2%). EXECUTIVE COUNCIL RACE HIGHLIGHTS NHADA MVPAC supported both candidates. District 2 • Winner/Results: Karen Liot Hill (Democrat) of Lebanon, won with 55.2% over Kim Strathdee (Republican) of Plymouth. Hill previously served 19 years as a city councilor and was mayor from 2008-2009. District 4 • Winner/Results: John Stephen (Republican) of Manchester secured victory with 53.8% over Jim O’Connell (Democrat) of Manchester. Stephen formerly served as Commissioner of the NH Department of Health & Human Services (2003-2007). STATE SENATE HIGHLIGHTS District 1 David Rochefort, a Republican from Littleton, defeated Democrat Rusty Talbot of Sugar Hill with 56.9% of the vote. This race was open following the decision of incumbent Republican Senator Carrie Gendreau of Littleton not to seek re-election. NHADA MVPAC supported Rochefort. District 3 Mark McConkey, a Republican from Freedom, won against Democrat Bill Marsh of Brookfield with 56.7% of the vote. This was an open race due to incumbent Republican Senate President Jeb Bradley of Wolfeboro not seeking re-election. McConkey previously served in the House as Chair of Public Works and Highways. NHADA MVPAC supported McConkey. District 11 — Upset Tim McGough, a Republican from Merrimack, defeated incumbent Democratic Senator Shannon Chandley of Amherst, securing 50.9% of the vote. District 15 Democrat Tara Reardon of Concord won against Republican Pamela Ean of Concord with 63% of the vote. This seat was open after incumbent Democratic Senator Becky Whitley of Hopkinton vacated it to pursue a congressional bid in the Second District, later dropping out before the Democratic primary. NHADA MVPAC supported Reardon. District 18 — Upset Victoria Sullivan, a Republican from Manchester, defeated Democratic Senate Minority Leader Donna Soucy with 51.5% of the vote. Sullivan had previously run for Mayor of Manchester, losing to Joyce Craig in both 2019 and 2021. District 20 Democrat Pat Long from Manchester defeated Republican Brittany Ping, securing 56.1% of the vote. This race was open due to the retirement of incumbent Democratic Senator Lou D’Alessandro, the Dean of the Senate. NHADA MVPAC supported Long. Like many other elections alike, the NHADA MVPAC played a supportive role in many of the state races above, backing candidates who align with their interests. As you’ve heard us say for many years, “We support those who support us.” 5

Following the recent hurricanes, it’s more important than ever to strengthen this fund to ensure continued support for industry members in times of crisis. Of course, I do not need to remind you of the important role you play in your communities, from leading local chambers of commerce to making big, impactful charitable contributions. And today, many of those family members — some very far away from you — are hurting and could really use your continued help. Emergency Relief Funds are going exactly where they should, but we need to keep the fund healthy — not just to support dealer employees who need our help today, but to be prepared to act quickly when the next disaster strikes. I’ve seen and heard many stories from dealerships and dealer associations doing their part to help people they’ve never met. Employees of Dick Myers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Harrisonburg, Virginia, collected a community’s worth of donations and supplies and drove a box truck, cargo van and two trailers over the border to Roan Mountain, Tennessee, a small community in the Blue Ridge Mountains flooded by the hurricane. Representatives from Williams Chevrolet Honda Kia drove vehicles full of donated toiletries, cleaning supplies, formula and diapers all the way from Traverse City, Michigan, down to the communities affected by Helene. Jim Ellis Toyota, located in McDonough, Georgia, blasted an invitation to hurricane evacuees across its social media channel. The dealership, located off I-75 between Atlanta and the Florida state line, offered shelter, coffee and water for those fleeing Hurricane Milton. Nothing about this reaction surprises me. Franchised dealerships will always step up to support each other, our employees and our neighbors. But our family is everywhere. This report was prepared by Auto Outlook, Inc., an independent automotive market analysis firm, and was sponsored by the New Hampshire Automobile Dealers Association. The report was compiled based on data collected from Experian Automotive, Auto Outlook, New Hampshire’s motor vehicle businesses, as well as government sources. The motor vehicle industry continues to be a significant driver in New Hampshire’s economy. Made up of over 2,000 businesses, our industry employs over 20,000 people. Highlighting the fact that the industry is full of good-paying, local jobs that can’t be outsourced, total compensation earned by those who work in New Hampshire’s motor vehicle industry was more than $1.7 billion in 2023. State and local tax revenue generated by New Hampshire’s neighborhood new car dealerships approached $70 million. New Hampshire new car dealerships also invested more than $41 million in capital expenditures on facilities and the industry as a whole donated an estimated $18.2 million to charitable and civic organizations. Accounting for an estimated 24% of retail sales in New Hampshire, the industry represents a significant portion of our local economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our members were deemed essential businesses; providing a means of transportation and carrying out vehicle inspections and repairs to keep New Hampshire’s roadways safe. This report highlights the positive economic benefits that New Hampshire’s motor vehicle businesses bring to the state, as well as the hundreds of cities and towns they call home. Recently, we sponsored an in-depth analysis of the economic impact of New Hampshire motor vehicle businesses on the state’s economy. The surveying and report was conducted by Auto Outlook Inc., an independent automotive market analysis firm trusted by many other automotive trade associations. Please see the initial findings highlighting data from our industry below. TIME AND ALLY FINANCIAL HONOR NH DEALER DAN DAGESSE The nomination of Daniel Dagesse, co-owner and chairman of Nucar Automall of Tilton, a Chrysler Dodge Ford Jeep Kia Nissan Ram and Volkswagen dealership in Tilton, New Hampshire, for the 2025 TIME Dealer of the Year award was announced by TIME. Dagesse is one of a select group of 49 dealer nominees from across the country who will be honored at the 108th annual National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Show in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Jan. 25, 2025. The TIME Dealer of the Year award is one of the automobile industry’s most prestigious and highly coveted honors. The award recognizes the nation’s most successful auto dealers who also demonstrate a long-standing commitment to community service. Dagesse was chosen to represent the New Hampshire Automobile Dealers Association in the national competition — one of only 49 auto dealers nominated for the 56th annual award from more than 20,000 nationwide. “I am not formally trained in the auto business, but I learned a work ethic, a sales technique and an instinct for success in the small-town life of New Hampshire’s North Country,” nominee Dagesse said. “I followed my heart and used a heavy dose of common sense to build long-term relationships with customers that continue to this day.” A 1970 graduate of Colebrook Academy in Colebrook, New Hampshire, Dagesse’s first job in the auto industry was selling cars at a Ford dealership in his hometown. When the owner passed away, Dagesse bought the store and doubled sales before selling the business within two years. He then invested in dealerships in Berlin, New Hampshire, acquiring stores and building new showrooms for his Berlin City Auto Group. “No one was trying to centralize multiple franchises under one roof at that time,” Dagesse said. “The Berlin markets were so small that I convinced manufacturers to let me cross-pollinate.” And after consolidating his dealerships, Dagesse instituted another innovation and developed a system to deliver cars to customers in his region, recruiting senior citizens for the project. He also established an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) within his company, so when he sold the auto group in 2006, his employees benefited greatly. Dagesse then moved to Florida, but his passion for the auto business inspired him to get back into the game. He bought and sold a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Florida to AutoNation after turning it around substantially. Then he acquired a Chevrolet store in Delaware and was given the opportunity to purchase Boch Automotive, a dealership group in the Boston area. Today, Dagesse and his son, Christopher, who has taken on most of the day-to-day management activities, lead the Nucar Family of Dealerships, which includes 30 stores in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Delaware. “I am proud that our North Country dealership, which I acquired again a few years ago, continues to serve customers who bought from me all those years before,” he said. “I still offer lower prices and ship vehicles statewide as I know it is the way to keep clients happy.” 12
Dagesse’s Nucar dealerships have received numerous awards from manufacturers for sales, customer satisfaction and operational excellence. And along with those successes, he strives to make each dealership an integral part of its surrounding community. “Whether it is offering a vehicle at a discount to a family who needs a lift up or reinvesting in the local area, giving back to the community is what motivates me most,” he said. Dagesse is extremely generous with his charitable giving, donating millions of dollars to various organizations. On Monday, Oct. 14, the Bank of Stage in downtown Concord came alive with excitement and support for a wonderful cause — the Raffle for Automotive Education. The room was filled with students, parents, teachers and NHADA members and partners, all who gathered for the shared goal of investing in our future workforce. Eight bright students, selected from a competitive pool of applicants, stood at the heart of the evening’s events. They had the chance to win a portion of $25,000 in scholarships that would be awarded that night. As the night unfolded, attendees watched inspiring videos from each student, capturing their future educational aspirations and career goals, as well as what receiving these scholarships would mean for them. The scholarships ranged from $1,000 to $10,000, and two of the most special awards of the evening were commemorative scholarships in honor of Paul Holloway and George Dykstra — two individuals with a longstanding history with NHADA, and who championed automotive education throughout their lives. These two scholarships were generously funded by the Exeter Area New Car Dealers Association, underscoring their deep commitment to the next generation of automotive professionals. In a heartwarming twist, two anonymous NHADA members came together during the event and doubled the amount of all $1,000 scholarships, raising them to $2,000 each. This unexpected act of generosity will make a lasting impact on the students, who were visibly moved by the gesture. The evening also featured a lively silent auction, with members and partners contributing some fantastic items. Bidding wars ensued, adding an exciting dynamic to the evening, while also raising additional funds for the cause. The Kitchen from Manchester, New Hampshire, provided delicious food, which kept the energy high throughout the night. The event wasn’t just about scholarships — it was a prime opportunity for networking. Students had the chance to meet and interact with members and partners, further expanding their opportunities within the automotive industry. Likewise, members and partners engaged with one another, strengthening relationships and fostering a sense of community. In the end, the night was a huge success, and none of it would have been possible without the unwavering support of NHADA’s members and partners. The positive vibes in the room were palpable, and the generosity and commitment to the next generation were truly inspiring. CELEBRATING NEW HAMPSHIRE AUTOMOTIVE CAREERS A Successful College and Career Day BY ADAM MEMMOLO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR, NHADA On Oct. 3, 2024, over 800 high school students gathered for an exciting College and Career Day focused on New Hampshire’s Motor Vehicle Industry. Hosted at the Manchester Community College campus, this event featured five New Hampshire-based community colleges — Great Bay Community College, Lakes Region Community College, Manchester Community College, Nashua Community College and White Mountain Community College — each showcasing their unique automotive programs. The day was made possible thanks to the collaboration of NHADA members, partners, staff and educators who worked hard to create an engaging and informative experience for students. Attendees were treated to a showcase of industry lifestyle perks, featuring special guests from the automotive sector. Highlights included drag race cars, pulling trucks and classic show cars, captivating the students and igniting their passion for the automotive field. One of the event’s standout features was a panel discussion with five alumni of the New Hampshire-based automotive programs. These graduates shared their personal journeys and insights into the industry, providing perspectives to groups of up to 140 students at a time. Their stories highlighted the diverse opportunities available in the automotive trade and inspired many students to consider pursuing a career in the field. As students wrapped up their day, they were treated to a complimentary lunch provided by Tulley Automotive Group, fueling their excitement as they boarded buses to head home. The relentless wind and freezing temperatures that accompany snowstorms, combined with the physically demanding task of clearing snow, create tough conditions for the staff. NEW FEMALE TECHNICIAN UNIFORMS UNVEILED at Toyota Boston Region Roundtable On Sept. 26, the Toyota Boston Region Female Technician Roundtable was hosted by NHADA Educational Partner, Lakes Region Community College. The event celebrated many achievements, including the introduction of new uniforms specifically designed for female technicians. During the roundtable, Toyota Transcripts were reviewed, sparking discussions on career growth pathways. At Toyota, career advancement is structured around a combination of e-learning modules, instructor-led classes, ASE certifications and tenure, ensuring a clear path for professional development. On the second day, Joe Myers led a presentation on his “Respect for People” program, which emphasizes fostering a professional and inclusive work environment, particularly in the Parts and Service departments. The roundtable concluded with a focus on employee retention. Discussions highlighted the importance of fair treatment and recognition for long-serving technicians. A key takeaway was the need to evaluate what is being offered to new hires compared to what is provided to loyal, hardworking team members. This ensures that those who have shown commitment and dedication are recognized and rewarded appropriately. Looking ahead, Toyota plans to expand this event by inviting more female technicians to a second roundtable in May. By September 2025, they aim to host a larger conference to create a broader industry impact and support the growing presence of women in automotive roles. REMINDER: Written Safety Program Update and the Safety Summary Form BY BRIAN DUPLESSIS LOSS PREVENTION SUPERVISOR, NHADA In January 2013, the statute changed and now requires the Safety Summary Form (SSF) to be filed with the New Hampshire Department of Labor (NH DOL) only one time. Employers who have filed an SSF from 2011 or later are not required to file it again. However, employers with 15 or more employees who have never filed or are unsure about filing should file one immediately. The SSF may be downloaded from the NH DOL’s website and faxed or emailed back to the department. The SSF is a synopsis of the NH DOL required written safety program. In lieu of filing the SSF, employers must review and update the written safety program by the employer at least every two years. The owner should sign and date an original copy of the updated program and have it available for NH DOL inspectors should they inquire. HOW DO NHADA MEMBERS’ VIOLATIONS COMPARE TO OSHA’S TOP 10? During our audits of NHADA members, we frequently identify several of the same violations listed in OSHA’s Top 10. The following are the violations we most commonly encounter: 1. Machine Guarding (1910.212): Issues include missing guards, missing shields, missing tool rests or improper tool rest adjustments on bench grinders. 2. Hazard Communication (1910.1200): Secondary containers are often not properly labeled with the chemical name. All containers holding chemicals must be labeled. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are sometimes out of date or missing. Every chemical used in service and parts areas must have an updated SDS. 3. Respiratory Protection (1910.134): Problems include incomplete medical questionnaires and fit tests, as well as improper respirator storage. Employees using half-face dual cartridge respirators must complete a medical questionnaire, which is reviewed by a medical professional to ensure they are fit to wear the respirator. Afterward, a fit test and training must be conducted to ensure a proper seal and teach the employee how to use, maintain and store the respirator properly. 4. Powered Industrial Trucks (1910.178): Common issues include incomplete forklift inspections, which should be conducted and documented before each shift, operators not wearing seatbelts, which must be worn at all times while operating, and incomplete training or evaluations for forklift operators. Training must be completed before operating a forklift, and recertification is required every three years or after an incident or near miss. 5. Personal Protective Equipment — Eye and Face Protection (1926.102): Employees often fail to wear safety glasses when required, such as when working under vehicles or using pneumatic tools like air guns or impact guns. THE IMPACT OF NON-COMPLIANCE Non-compliance with OSHA standards can result in serious consequences, including: • Injuries and Illnesses: Non-compliance can lead to workplace injuries and illnesses, which can have a devastating impact on workers and their families. • Fines and Penalties: OSHA can impose significant fines on employers who violate safety and health regulations. • Lost Productivity: Accidents and illnesses can disrupt operations and reduce productivity. • Damage to Reputation: Negative publicity associated with workplace safety violations can damage an employer’s reputation. PROMOTING WORKPLACE SAFETY Employers can take several steps to reduce workplace hazards and prevent injuries and illnesses: • Develop a Strong Safety Culture: Encourage a culture of safety by prioritizing safety in all aspects of the business. • Provide Adequate Training: Train employees on safety procedures, hazard recognition and emergency response. • Conduct Regular Inspections: Regularly inspect workplaces to identify and correct hazards. • Invest in Safety Equipment: Provide employees with the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect them from hazards. • Encourage Employee Participation: Involve employees in safety committees and encourage them to report hazards. By prioritizing workplace safety, employers can create a safer and healthier work environment for their employees and protect their businesses from potential liabilities.
