20 Hoosier Banker October 2014 EDUCATION ROUNDUP Mission Accomplished: LDP Participants Make Leadership Strides The Indiana Bankers Association initiated its pinnacle Leadership Development Program (LDP) last year in response to member interest in addressing the future of banking. Following success with success, IBA reprised the intense, eight-month program this year. Three of the four sessions of the 2014 LDP already have taken place, with the final session concluding on Oct. 24. IBA’s Leadership Development Program, held in the distraction-free setting of Wooded Glen Retreat and Conference Center in Henryville, heightens leadership ability in the banking community by sharpening skills in decision-making, change management, relationship-building and public speaking. Challenging projects are designed to test and build participants’ leadership strength. At the most recent session of the LDP, held in August, participants engaged in a community outreach challenge. The three teams of bankers – the Admirals, Crusaders and Wooded Warriors – worked for weeks in advance to plan, execute and document their team missions. The work was complex, the competition was fierce, and the rewards were plentiful in helping to better the lives of those in need. Below are summaries of the outreach programs: Admirals – Carnival Day for Hillcroft Residents Concept: The Admirals elected to help individuals with disabilities, specifically by interacting through baseball/softball. After searching for an organization that was well run, yet in need of and receptive to assistance, the team selected Hillcroft Services Inc., a nonprofit that serves children with developmental delays and adults with disabilities. Working closely with Hillcroft staff, the Admirals evolved their concept into a daylong baseball-themed carnival to allow for increased attendance and interaction. Event: The Admirals and Hillcroft staff hosted a baseball-themed carnival on July 10; it featured a variety of activities to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilities of Hillcroft residents. Booths, manned by Admirals team members, offered photos, face painting, a duck/baseball pond, baseball-shaped cookie decorating, batting, base running and more. Attendees earned prizes, which were giveaways from team members’ banks and specially made tee shirts. Coins and tokens for use at the booths added a financial component to the carnival. Outcome: The daylong event was attended by almost all Hillcroft residents and staff, and family members also joined in on the fun. To document the event, Admiral team members took plentiful photos and created a video recap; all documentation has been donated to Hillcroft Services for future marketing endeavors. Award winner: In recognition of the depth, breadth and scope of this project, LDP instructors selected the Admirals as the winning team.
