35 Hoosier Banker October 2014 First Financial Bank, Columbus, is serving as title sponsor of the Ethnic Expo for the city of Columbus for the fifth consecutive year. The event, held each October, celebrates the diversity of the Columbus community. As title sponsor, First Financial donated $25,000 to the city. Horizon Bank, NA, Michigan City, has partnered with Artspace, a leader in artist-led community transformation, to renovate Michigan City’s historic Warren Building. The five-story building will be re-developed to feature retail and classroom areas; artist studios; and three floors of apartments for low-income residents, catered toward attracting local artists. After initial construction, Horizon Bank will be providing an additional grant of $100,000, to be paid over the course of five years, for ongoing improvements and maintenance. West End Bank, Richmond, selects one nonprofit organization each month as a focus for charitable efforts. For the month of September, the bank selected Adult Daycare of Richmond and donated $370 to the organization. Dan W. Mitchell, 86, retired president and chief executive officer of Old National Bank, Evansville, died Aug. 31. He joined the transit department of the bank in 1950 and subsequently held numerous positions, culminating with his appointment as president and CEO in 1980. Mitchell retired in 1994. His community outreach included service on the boards of Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, University of Evansville, Evansville Philharmonic, Evansville Dance Theatre and Welborn Baptist Hospital; he also was active with United Way, Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity, Methodist in MeMory oF Temple, The Beacon Group and Tri-State Food Bank. Awards included being named National President of Robert Morris Associates, The Distinguished Citizens Award from Buffalo Trace Council, Rotary Club Civic Award, University of Evansville Honorary Alumni, Businessman of the Year by Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity and inductee of the Evansville Business Hall of Fame. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mitchell attended Evansville College and was a graduate of Indiana University.
