Amanda MORRISFELDMAN EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER – FIRST FEDERAL SAVINGS BANK, ROCHESTER What was your first job, and what did you learn from it? My first job was working as a secretary in my dad’s State Farm office. Primarily, I learned that working for your dad doesn’t always give you an accurate picture of what work really looks like! Just kidding … kind of. I learned about customer service, particularly that kindness and a willingness to help go a long way, and that leading with friendliness sets the appropriate tone. What drew you to banking? I didn’t necessarily choose banking, banking chose me! I started my career as an auditor, as luck would have it, of financial institutions. I did, in fact, choose that particular audit practice, but mostly because I didn’t want to do inventories at manufacturing companies! What recent professional challenge taught you an important lesson, and how did you overcome it? The two most recent years in banking have been the most challenging of my career due to the economic environment. I’ve had to learn to “go with the flow,” as they say, and adapt quickly. I’ve also had to learn new things and how to think and approach financial management differently. I’m not sure those are things that SHOULD be overcome, but I do know that a positive mindset is non-negotiable. What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in banking? Make an effort to meet peers. Not network, because I think that can feel insincere, but meet people in similar positions that you can reach out to with problems, questions, ideas, etc. Community banking really is a community, particularly in Indiana, and I’ve valued my relationships with my peers so much.
