Samuel P. “Sam” Kuhter, CPA, an audit manager at Lutz in Grand Island, was one of only 30 CPAs honored by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) as a member of the Leadership Academy’s 16th graduating class. Kuhter was selected based on his exceptional leadership skills and professional experience for the four-day Leadership Academy program, held Dec. 9-12. Kuhter began his career in 2018. Today, he specializes in financial statement preparation and tax consulting, focusing on industries such as agribusiness, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations. Kuhter values the opportunity to mentor younger employees and contribute to their professional growth. In 2022, he was recognized as one of the Grand Island Chamber’s Top 35 Under 35 for his leadership and commitment to the community’s growth and success. The AICPA Leadership Academy was designed to strengthen and expand the leadership skills of promising emerging professionals while they network with a peer group of talented and motivated CPAs. The Leadership Academy features career-development workshops and sessions with some of the accounting profession’s most prominent influencers. Participants were selected from public accounting firms of all sizes, business and industry, government, education, and consulting firms. The 2024 Leadership Academy attendees were recommended by their employers, state CPA societies, and/or volunteer organizations. Candidates submitted resumes and a statement explaining how participating in the Leadership Academy would impact them personally and professionally. To date, more than 480 CPAs have participated in the AICPA Leadership Academy, many of whom have gone on to serve in leadership positions in their firms, businesses, and organizations. The Lienemann Charitable Foundation pledged the gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation in honor of Delmar Lienemann Sr., who graduated from NU in 1941. The pledge will create the endowed Delmar A. Lienemann Sr. Presidential Chair of Accounting, providing an annual stipend for salary, research, and program support. The Lienemann family initially created the chair position in 2011. A 10-year gift commitment will also support the Center for Entrepreneurship, which gives students experience through hands-on competitions, workshops, and mentoring by Nebraska entrepreneurs. The center currently awards more than $80,000 annually to students to create new businesses, while also providing support through the student-led Husker Venture Fund. Society member Douglas E. “Doug” Lienemann, president of the Lienemann Charitable Foundation, a UNL alumnus and trustee of the NU Foundation, said the donation “is a way to honor our father” as well as help the College of Business attract a top faculty position. The Lienemann Charitable Foundation was created in 1967 by Del Lienemann Sr. and his wife, Charlotte. Lienemann was a CPA, real estate developer, retailer, investor, and civic leader in Lincoln before his death in 2018 at the age of 98. The couple’s children are all UNL alumni, and three sons graduated from the College of Business. The NU Foundation said the gift was made as part of the Only in Nebraska: A Campaign for Our University’s Future, which has a goal of raising $3 billion from 150,000 individual donors.
