A LEGACY MEASURED IN LEADERSHIP Honoring the Remarkable Career of Darryl J. Fenn, PLS BY MICHAEL NADEAU, PLS, CFEDS For many within the surveying profession in Utah and throughout the West, Darryl Fenn’s name has become synonymous with leadership, mentorship, service and dedication to the profession of land surveying. After a career spanning nearly five decades, Darryl officially retired in June 2026, closing a remarkable chapter that began in 1979 when he first entered the surveying profession directly out of high school. What followed was a career defined not only by professional success, but by an unwavering commitment to advancing the profession and investing in the people within it. In 1997, Darryl, alongside two engineering partners, founded Meridian Engineering Inc., helping build what would become one of Utah’s respected engineering and surveying firms. Under his leadership, Meridian grew into a company known not only for technical excellence, but also for its culture of mentorship, professionalism and integrity. While his accomplishments in business are significant, those who know Darryl best understand that his greatest impact has always been on people. Throughout his career, Darryl dedicated countless hours to the Utah Council of Land Surveyors, serving in nearly every capacity imaginable. He served two terms as UCLS Chairman, represented Utah at both the Western Federation of Professional Surveyors (WFPS) and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), chaired numerous committees, organized conferences and advocated for the advancement and protection of the profession.
