Meet the UCLS Leadership Nathan Weber, PLS UCLS Chair Elect Diamond Design and Land Surveying, President As the son of a land surveyor working in Vernal, Utah, through the ‘70s and ‘80s, Nathan grew up immersed in the profession. To a young child, laying out an oil well wasn’t just work; it was an adventure. He was sure he wasn’t much help back then, but he loved every minute of those days. Nathan’s formal career began in 1993 at Freston Ostler Vernon and Associates. He was just 16, but those early years solidified his path. He often reflects on the mentorship and camaraderie of that era. He was fortunate to learn the fundamentals with a Wild T-16 and a steel tape, slope staking with a hand level, and recording every measurement by hand in a field book. Watching the leap from manual instruments to GPS in the ‘90s sparked a lifelong fascination with how technology reshapes our work. From seeing his first robotic total station on the I-15 reconstruction project to being trained in GPS theory as a survey auditor, he saw firsthand how our capabilities were expanding. That training led him to Meridian Engineering and Darryl Fenn, a leader he still looks up to today. He feels he has been blessed to work alongside mentors like Keith Russell, Doug Kinsman and Jim Pitkin — men who embody the truth that the profession cannot survive without those willing to teach. According to Nathan, he owes a special debt of gratitude to Evan Wood, who brought him into Diamond Design and Land Surveying. Evan provided the opportunity and professional “breathing room” Nathan needed to earn his degree. Since purchasing the firm from Evan in 2003, he has been honored to serve as president. Over the last two decades, technology has taken Nathan from mines and oil refineries to nuclear centrifuges, NASA projects and amusement parks. But recently, his focus has shifted. While he still loves the tools, his passion has moved from the technology that drives the work to the profession itself. He’s come to see technology not as the destination, but as the support system for the vital role we all play in society. This shift in perspective is what led him to the state chair elect position for the UCLS. UCLS Foresights 8
