UAFP also awards the Resident Leadership Award to recognize the accomplishments of one of our third-year family medicine residents in Utah. Nominations are sent in by residency faculty, peers and other residency staff. Those nominated needed to demonstrate promotion of family medicine, leadership skills and serving as a role model to peers. Additional consideration was given for teaching skills, professionalism, research skills and community service. The UAFP Member Engagement Committee voted on the final winner and chose Hendrik Stegall, MD, from the University of Utah Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Stegall’s nomination stated, “As chief resident responsible for the Wellness, Identity, Culture and Community Committee of our residency, Hendrik was tasked with leading monthly meetings and facilitating activities to support resident well-being. He went above and beyond the expectations for this role by applying for and being awarded a GME Wellness grant to better understand the culture of the residency. Through his leadership, he guided the residents and faculty through a project that created a better understanding of each group’s perspectives on professional well-being. This helped identify differences but also highlighted shared values.” We are thrilled that Dr. Stegall will be staying at the University of Utah Family Medicine Residency, joining the team as a faculty member! 13
