Previously I had served as president and CEO of the Community Bankers Association of Indiana (CBAI), which merged with the IBA on Oct. 1, 2006. ȱ ‘ŽœŽȱ™ŠœȱŗŖȱ¢ŽŠ›œȱ‘ŠŸŽȱ̘ —ȱ‹¢Ƿ ȱ —ȱ‘ŠȱꛜȱŒ˜•ž–—ǰȱ ȱ ›˜ŽȱŠ‹˜žȱ‘Žȱ ŽŠ•Žœȱœ˜—ǰȱ “Hello, Goodbye.” It was appropriate for me to wish Jim well in his retirement (goodbye) and to introduce myself to those who had not worked with me before (hello). It seems appropriate now to tie the Hello, Goodbye theme ›˜–ȱŠȱŽŒŠŽȱŠ˜ȱ˜ȱ˜Š¢ǯȱ ‘’œȱ ’••ȱ‹Žȱ–¢ȱꗊ•ȱŒ˜•ž–—ȱ’—ȱ Hoosier Banker as your CEO. I have enjoyed my time in this role and my overall banking career of 47 years. I hope to still participate in the IBA Mega Conference and Annual Convention, so that I can stay in touch with the many friends that I have made in this business. I will spend ’—Ž›œȱ’—ȱ •˜›’Šǰȱ•ŽŠ›—’—ȱ‘˜ ȱ˜ȱ‹ŽȱŠȱœ—˜ ‹’›Ƿ Milestones of my career appear in a separate article in this edition of Hoosier Banker, but one particularly bright memory was hiring a young lady who had just graduated from the Robert H. McKinney School of Law at Indiana University in Indianapolis. I was introduced to her through a lobbyist friend of mine, which seems odd in retrospect, given that both her mother and father were community bankers. Amber R. Moore joined the CBAI in 2002 with the Œ‘Š›Žȱ˜ȱ•ŽŠȱ˜ž›ȱŽě˜›œȱ’—ȱ˜ŸŽ›—–Ž—ȱ›Ž•Š’˜—œǯ Amber started her career on a high note and has never wavered. Within the next couple of years, she married Russell Van Til, to become Amber R. Van Til. Earlier this ¢ŽŠ›ǰȱ –‹Ž›ȱ Šœȱ—Š–Žȱ™›Žœ’Ž—ȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱ ȱŠ—ǰȱŽěŽŒ’ŸŽȱ Jan. 1, 2017, she will become president and CEO, and my successor. ȱ ‘Žȱ ’••ȱ‹Žȱ‘ŽȱœŽŸŽ—‘ȱŒ‘’ŽȱœŠěȱ˜ĜŒŽ›ȱ˜ȱ•ŽŠȱ‘Žȱ ȱ since its founding in 1897. Amber is well suited to assume this leadership position, and I could not be prouder than to have her succeed me. That was my abbreviated version of the Hello part of this article. Now for the Goodbye part, which will be even ‹›’ŽŽ›ǯȱ ȱ‘ŠŸŽȱŠ• Š¢œȱ›’Žȱ˜ȱ–Š’—Š’—ȱŠȱ™˜œ’’ŸŽȱŠĴ’žŽȱ about the business of banking. I believe that it is the most important business in the world, because it provides the capital required of every other business. Those businesses then create jobs that allow individuals to meet their needs and dreams. Banking is where that all starts. Bankers make this happen. Bankers are dream makers. Bankers are the backbone of our economic system. Bankers should always be proud of what they do, and know the importance of the decisions they make. It has been my pleasure to serve bankers and the banking industry. I am proud of what we collectively have accomplished. I have lived for the past 26 years at the intersection ˜ȱ‹Š—”’—ȱŠ—ȱ™˜•’’Œœǰȱ‹˜‘ȱ˜ȱ ‘’Œ‘ȱŠěŽŒȱŽŸŽ›¢ȱ™Ž›œ˜—ȱ’—ȱ this country. Through the years, I have had the privilege to meet wonderful people and to travel throughout the United States. Thanks to all of you, I have enjoyed an interesting and rewarding career journey. Joe DeHaven has announced plans to retire as chief Ž¡ŽŒž’ŸŽȱ˜ĜŒŽ›ȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱ —’Š—Šȱ Š—”Ž›œȱ œœ˜Œ’Š’˜—ǰȱŽěŽŒ- tive Dec. 31. He has served in association leadership for 26 years and in Indiana banking for 47 years. Amber R. In 2007 he was promoted to president and CEO; last March, the president’s title was conferred to DeHaven’s successor as part of a leadership transition plan. Prior to the IBA/CBAI merger, DeHaven had been serving the CBAI as president and CEO from 1990 through 2006. Prochnow Educational Foundation; the IBA Group Health Insurance Trust; the New Markets Tax Credit Advisory Board of the Cinnaire Corporation Fund for Housing; the Indiana Legal Foundation; Friends of Traditional Banking; the State Bankers Association Alliance; the Minority Bank Council of the Independent Community Bankers of America; the Council of Community Banker Associations; the Independent Community Bankers of America; the American Bankers Association Government Relations –’—’œ›Š’ŸŽȱ ˜ž—Œ’•Dzȱ‘Žȱ —’Š—Šȱ ŠŽ ’Žȱ Ž›’ꮍȱ Development Corp.; and the Family Services of Delaware County. One of the most important was the change in banking structure, which allowed banks to branch beyond county lines Š—ȱŠ•œ˜ȱ™Ž›–’ĴŽȱ‹Š—”ȱ‘˜•’—ȱ companies. Another important change was the rapid development of technology as it pertained to banking. “One of the biggest challenges during this time was to keep bankers informed about what was going on. An important part of this process Šœȱ‘ŽȱŒ˜––ž—’ŒŠ’˜—ȱŽě˜›œȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱ Hoosier Banker. “The fondest memories of my years with the IBA are the friendships developed during that time. Many of these friendships have continued through personal visits, email and phone calls. “I had the privilege of working with a very dedicated, professional Š—ȱŠ•Ž—ŽȱœŠěǯȱ ‘ŽȱœŠěǰȱŠ•˜—ȱ with so many volunteer bankers, contributed toward accomplishing the mission of the IBA. ȱ ȃ ȱ’œȱęĴ’—ȱ‘Šȱ‘’œȱœ™ŽŒ’Š•ȱ’œœžŽȱ˜ȱ the Hoosier Banker celebrate the 100th anniversary of the magazine. The Hoosier Banker publishes examples of banks helping people to accomplish business and personal goals, in order that these customers can contribute ŽĴŽ›œȱ ›˜–ȱ ȱ ŽŠŽ›œ In honor of the 100-year anniversary of Hoosier Bankerȱ–ŠŠ£’—Žǰȱ‘›ŽŽȱŒ‘’ŽȱœŠěȱ˜ĜŒŽ›œȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱ —’Š—Šȱ Š—”Ž›œȱ Association share their memories of banking during their years of leadership: “I came to the Indiana Bankers Association in 1987 as successor to Bob Nelson, IBA’s longtime president. My initial position was as executive vice president, and then I was named president when Bob retired in 1988. “As former president of Second National Bank of Richmond, and as a past IBA chairman, I was familiar with the Association when I joined. I also was familiar with the many challenges facing Hoosier bankers. “There was a revolution taking place in the business of banking, due to changing laws regarding branching, combinations of businesses and the very structure of banking. Within the span of a few years, the overall face of banking changed a great deal. ȱ ȃ ¢ȱ‹’ŽœȱŒ‘Š••Ž—Žœǰȱœ™ŽŒ’ęŒȱ to running the Association, were remaining focused on serving the banks of Indiana, and surviving as a meaningful supporter of our member “It is such a privilege to be leading the IBA during this historic 100th anniversary of Hoosier Banker magazine, the voice for bank news in Indiana. Both Bob Nelson and Bill King indicated that passage of the statewide and interstate banking bill during Bob’s career was ŠȱŽę—’—ȱ–˜–Ž—ȱ˜›ȱ˜ž›ȱ’—žœ›¢ǯȱ They are absolutely correct, and it Š•œ˜ȱ ŠœȱŠȱŽę—’—ȱ–˜–Ž—ȱ‘Šȱ‘Šœȱ ŒŠžœŽȱœ’—’ęŒŠ—ȱ’—žœ›¢ȱŒ˜—œ˜•- idation and shifted banking issues ˜ȱ‹Ž’—ȱ–˜›ŽȱŽę—ŽȱŠȱ‘ŽȱŽŽ›Š•ȱ to the success and growth of their local communities. The Hoosier Banker and the IBA help bankers make all of this happen, in addition to their own contributions to this process, on a local, state and national level.” Robert C. FIRREA, Riegle-Neal, FDICIA, Gramm-LeachBliley and the Dodd-Frank Act have Žę—Žȱ‹Š—”’—ȱœ’—ŒŽȱ‘Šȱ’–Žǯ “Of course there are exceptions to every rule. The state legislature still ‘ŠœȱŠȱ‘žŽȱŽěŽŒȱ˜—ȱ‹Š—”’—ȱ‘›˜ž‘ȱ mortgage foreclosure rules and taxation issues, in particular. “During my association career, 1990-2016, we were blessed with two ꗊ—Œ’Š•ȱ’—œ’ž’˜—ȱŠ¡ȱ›ŽžŒ’˜—œȱ and were able to erect stronger walls around the Indiana-unique Public Deposit Insurance Fund (PDIF). This pool of money was established by banks to protect taxpayers from increased local taxes in the event of a bank failure that resulted in a sizable loss to a public governmental entity. ȱ ȃ žŒ‘ȱŠȱ™˜˜•ȱ˜ȱ–˜—Ž¢ȱŠĴ›ŠŒœȱ•˜œȱ ˜ȱŠĴŽ—’˜—ȱ›˜–ȱ•Ž’œ•Š˜›œǰȱ ‘˜ȱ will try to divert its use to something other than its intended purpose. Creating stronger walls around the PDIF helps prevent legislative encroachment. “During my time, the merger of the IBA and the Indiana League of Savings Institutions in 2000, and the merger of the IBA and the Community Bankers Association of Indiana in 2006 were monumental achievements. This uniting of the ‹Š—”’—ȱ’—žœ›¢ȱ™›˜Ÿ’Žȱꗊ—Œ’Š•ȱ stability to the IBA, consistency in educational programming, and more ŽěŽŒ’ŸŽȱŠŸ˜ŒŠŒ¢ȱ’—ȱ —’Š—Š™˜•’œȱ and with the Indiana delegation in Washington, DC. Add to that the success of the New Markets Tax Credits program and the strength and Š•Ž—ȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱ ȱœŠěǰȱŠ—ȱ‘Žȱ›Žœž•ȱ is that the IBA is among the strongest state bankers associations in the country today. ȱ ȃ ‘Žȱ˜‘Ž›ȱŽę—’—ȱŽŸŽ—ȱ Šœȱ‘Žȱ ꗊ—Œ’Š•ȱŒ›’œ’œȱ‘ŠȱŒž•–’—ŠŽȱ’—ȱ 2008, resulting in a serious tarnishing of banking’s historic pristine image. While the situation has improved, the industry has not recovered the •ŽŸŽ•ȱ˜ȱŒžœ˜–Ž›ȱŒ˜—ꍮ—ŒŽȱ‘Šȱ previously had characterized banking throughout my life. “There remains plenty for future generations to work on.
