8 HќќѠіђџȱ юћјђџ ђѐђњяђџȱ2016 “I retired as president of the Indiana bankers Association after a very rewarding career of 33 years. “Many changes in banking took place during that time. One of the most important was the change in banking structure, which allowed banks to branch beyond county lines Š—ȱŠ•œ˜ȱ™Ž›–’ĴŽȱ‹Š—”ȱ‘˜•’—ȱ companies. Another important change was the rapid development of technology as it pertained to banking. “One of the biggest challenges during this time was to keep bankers informed about what was going on. An important part of this process Šœȱ‘ŽȱŒ˜––ž—’ŒŠ’˜—ȱŽě˜›œȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱ Hoosier Banker. “The fondest memories of my years with the IBA are the friendships developed during that time. Many of these friendships have continued through personal visits, email and phone calls. “I had the privilege of working with a very dedicated, professional Š—ȱŠ•Ž—ŽȱœŠěǯȱ ‘ŽȱœŠěǰȱŠ•˜—ȱ with so many volunteer bankers, contributed toward accomplishing the mission of the IBA. ȱ ȃ ȱ’œȱęĴ’—ȱ‘Šȱ‘’œȱœ™ŽŒ’Š•ȱ’œœžŽȱ˜ȱ the Hoosier Banker celebrate the 100th anniversary of the magazine. The Hoosier Banker publishes examples of banks helping people to accomplish business and personal goals, in order that these customers can contribute ŽĴŽ›œȱ ›˜–ȱ ȱ ŽŠŽ›œ In honor of the 100-year anniversary of Hoosier Bankerȱ–ŠŠ£’—Žǰȱ‘›ŽŽȱŒ‘’ŽȱœŠěȱ˜ĜŒŽ›œȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱ —’Š—Šȱ Š—”Ž›œȱ Association share their memories of banking during their years of leadership: “I came to the Indiana Bankers Association in 1987 as successor to Bob Nelson, IBA’s longtime president. My initial position was as executive vice president, and then I was named president when Bob retired in 1988. “As former president of Second National Bank of Richmond, and as a past IBA chairman, I was familiar with the Association when I joined. I also was familiar with the many challenges facing Hoosier bankers. “There was a revolution taking place in the business of banking, due to changing laws regarding branching, combinations of businesses and the very structure of banking. Within the span of a few years, the overall face of banking changed a great deal. ȱ ȃ ¢ȱ‹’ŽœȱŒ‘Š••Ž—Žœǰȱœ™ŽŒ’ęŒȱ to running the Association, were remaining focused on serving the banks of Indiana, and surviving as a meaningful supporter of our member “It is such a privilege to be leading the IBA during this historic 100th anniversary of Hoosier Banker magazine, the voice for bank news in Indiana. Both Bob Nelson and Bill King indicated that passage of the statewide and interstate banking bill during Bob’s career was ŠȱŽę—’—ȱ–˜–Ž—ȱ˜›ȱ˜ž›ȱ’—žœ›¢ǯȱ They are absolutely correct, and it Š•œ˜ȱ ŠœȱŠȱŽę—’—ȱ–˜–Ž—ȱ‘Šȱ‘Šœȱ ŒŠžœŽȱœ’—’ęŒŠ—ȱ’—žœ›¢ȱŒ˜—œ˜•- idation and shifted banking issues ˜ȱ‹Ž’—ȱ–˜›ŽȱŽę—ŽȱŠȱ‘ŽȱŽŽ›Š•ȱ to the success and growth of their local communities. The Hoosier Banker and the IBA help bankers make all of this happen, in addition to their own contributions to this process, on a local, state and national level.” Robert C.
