CCommunity bankers, examiners, auditors, and others who have been involved in our industry for more than a couple of years have almost certainly heard, or heard of, Ed Krei. A keynote speaker, banking analyst, and instructor to regulators and graduate students alike, he’s also a guy who produces laugh lines nearly as memorable as the knowledge he imparts in his presentations. “Indiana bankers congratulate Ed on his retirement,” says S. Joe DeHaven, Chief Executive Officer, Indiana Bankers Association. “He has been among the most popular speakers in Indiana for over twenty years. Ed’s wisdom and insight have been utilized by our banks to maximize investment returns while maintaining appropriate safety and soundness principles. Best wishes for a long and happy retirement.” Since the mid-nineties, Ed’s been a managing director, senior analyst, and go-to guy for regulatory issues among many other things at our firm, The Baker Group LP. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have him all these years, and though he’ll continue to teach banking schools and do other work in the industry, after mid-year we’re no longer going to have him as a day-to-day resource at Baker. Ed leaves behind some big shoes to fill. His depth of banking knowledge and presentation skills are matched only by his humor, or perhaps his frequent-flyer status with the airlines. The Wit and Wisdom of Ed Krei Jeffrey F. Caughron Chief Operating Officer Managing Director The Baker Group LP During his tenure, Ed has been an invaluable resource to clients around the country and a wonderful spokesman and representative of our firm. There are few in the banking industry who have made such a powerful, positive impact, and done it with such humor. To underscore that last point, one can’t help but chuckle at even a brief list of Ed’s greatest quips. Some are original, others he always attributed, but every one guaranteed a laugh. Here’s just a small sampling of some favorites: “Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.” “There’s little education in the second kick of a mule.” “If it grows too fast it’s probably a weed.” “If it’s faster for me to misspell a word, I’ll do that to save time. It’s a small mind that can only spell a word one way.” “Economists are guys who are good with numbers but didn’t have the personality to be a CPA.” “Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused.” There is, and always has been, only one Ed Krei. Often imitated, never duplicated. Ed’s brilliant insight and great humor—always used in behalf of his banking clients—has made our industry better. There can be no doubt that the wit and wisdom of Ed Krei will continue to be second to none. Ed Krei Retires from The Baker Group The Baker Group LP has announced the June 30, 2016 retirement of Ed Krei, a managing director and board member who joined the company in 1994. A frequent speaker at banking and investment conferences and a faculty member of several banking schools, Ed has served on numerous civic and community boards. He plans to devote more time to charitable endeavors with which he is involved. Ed received his BBA with honors in accountancy from the University of Mississippi, and was gold medalist on the CPA examination in Tennessee. He was recently inducted into the school of accountancy’s hall of fame. In 2008 he received the Chairman’s award from the Independent Bankers Association of Texas in recognition of his contribution to Texas community banking.
