Employees also volunteered to participate in Operation Christmas Child by purchasing various items throughout the year to help make an impact in the lives of many children living in extreme poverty overseas. First Bank of Berne donated $1,600 to the Jay Community Center to be used for its Summer Day Camp, 5K Circuit and Boomer Sports programs. First Bank Richmond, NA, supported the Third Grade Reading Academy in 2016. The academy is an intensive summer reading program that takes place each June in Richmond. The bank began volunteering as “Reading Buddies” for the program in 2013, and each year since has increased the number of sites and volunteers for the program; in 2016, there were four sites with over 50 bank volunteers. Bankers visit local sites and read with one or two students for approximately 45 minutes each week. First Federal Savings Bank, Huntington, donated $100,000 to the Parkview Huntington YMCA efforts to work toward the organization’s capital campaign goal of raising $1.3 million. The goals of the capital campaign, “Strong Y = Strong Community,” is to increase the YMCA’s ability to build programs and services by reducing the organization’s longterm debt, and also to raise funds for new equipment and facility renovation projects. Michael Zahn, bank president and CEO, declared: “First Federal Savings Bank is honored to have the opportunity to support Parkview Huntington YMCA’s Capital Campaign. Our commitment towards advancing the YMCA’s mission in Huntington County spans three generations and reflects our belief that the Y makes our community stronger.” First State Bank of Middlebury has partnered with Banzai Financial Literacy in developing an online, real-life scenario program for students in middle school through high school. The bank brings the student books to the classroom and shares financial literacy information. As a bonus for the students, the bank offers an incentive for the students to finish the program: Students 17 years of age and older are presented with a certificate for $25 in a student account, while students under the age of 17 are given a set of ear buds. First Savings Bank, Clarksville, awarded Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana a $75,000 grant from the First Savings Charitable Foundation, allowing approximately 3,500 southern Indiana students in Clark, Crawford and Washington counties, to participate in BizTown and Finance Park. Larry Myers, bank president and CEO, stated: “We recognize the necessity to educate our youth about financial literacy, and we consider it an honor to assist Junior Achievement in impacting as many students as possible in our communities.
