2017 Vol. 101 No. 2

Hoosier Banker 19 On Feb. 7, a crowd of some 200 Indiana lawmakers, banking leaders and IBA associate members gathered at the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis for the 2017 Indiana Bankers Association Legislative Briefing and Reception. The IBA hosts this annual event in the early weeks of each legislative session to provide an opportunity for IBA members and associate members to meet with legislators, and talk with them about issues important to banking, and to thank them for their service to Indiana. This year’s proceedings began in the morning with a meeting of the IBA board of directors. Afterward board members joined with members of the IBA Government Relations Committee for a luncheon hosted by The KeyState Companies. The guest speaker at the luncheon was Director Thomas C. Fite of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. Following the luncheon, attendees retreated to a joint meeting of the IBA board and Government Relations Committee for a thorough review of House and Senate bills that merit industry attention. The IBA GR Team discussed each bill of interest, and bankers provided their insights and views on pending legislation. At 4 p.m., the Legislative Briefing commenced, with attendance from a sizable contingent of IBA-member bankers and associate members who traveled from throughout the state to attend. The IBA Team again reviewed bills pertinent to bankers, with focus on prominent pieces of pending legislation: • SB 90 – Doing Business or Marketing as a Cooperative • SB 227 – Foreclosure Counseling and Education Fee • SB 267 – Investment of Public Money • SB 345 – Financial Crimes Against the Elderly • SB 505 – County Recorder Matters • SB 539 – Notaries Public and Trademarks • HB 1240 – Garnishment of Wages • HB 1294 – Tenant Eviction Upon Foreclosure • HB 1373 – Regulation of Mortgage Foreclosures • HB 1407 – Probate and Trust Matters • HB 1511 – Liens on Towed Vehicles • HB 1539 – Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit • HB 1557 – Municipal Water Utility Liens • HR 3 – Study of Sales Tax on Services Also at the briefing, IBA President and CEO Amber Van Til presented 200% Club awards to those banks which contributed at least 200 percent of their fair share goals to Indiana BANKPAC during 2016. The IBA appreciates the generosity and support of the nearly 30 banks which were recognized with awards. At 5 o’clock the briefing adjourned, and the Legislative Reception began. IBA members and associate members mixed and mingled with a strong showing of Indiana representatives, senators and other elected officials, who came to the event to meet with constituents. The reception provided an ideal environment for the banking community to converse with lawmakers on issues that affect the business of banking. The annual IBA Legislative Briefing and Reception is one of several grassroots advocacy opportunities that give a voice to Indiana bankers. Additional advocacy events throughout the year include the Future Leadership Division Day at the Statehouse, which took place in March; IBA regional meetings held each summer; and the IBA Annual Washington Trip, scheduled this year for Sept. 24-26. In addition, the IBA continues to keep members informed through the IBA Insighter, IBA E-News and periodic action alerts.
