Hoosier Banker 41 Start Assessing Impact Now Bankers should take action now to assess the impact of operating leases on their banks’ balance sheets. The addition of right-ofuse assets to a bank’s balance sheet is likely to impact the calculation of its regulatory capital ratios. Banks should begin discussing these impacts to regulatory capital ratios with their primary regulators. In addition, loan officers and credit analysts should begin assessing the impact on loan covenants for customers with leases and determining the impact to credit evaluation. Additionally the impact to financial analysis for credit evaluation and monitoring will have to be assessed, and perhaps software modifications will be required. With the many implementation issues that need to be considered, the implementation dates of 2019 or 2020 will approach rapidly.
