Hoosier Banker 47 partnering with the Fort Wayne Community Foundation in 2003, iAB has awarded over $140,600 in scholarship monies to 137 local students as they pursue educational excellence. Home Bank, Martinsville, donated $8,000 in May to the Morgan County Center for Women’s Ministries to help with needs related to the organization’s facility. The center is a nonprofit that provides free peer counseling and support to women over the age of 13; additionally it works closely with other nonprofits such as WellSpring Center, Desert Rose and the Magdalene House. Betty Apple Rush, senior vice president and CFO of BloomBank, Bloomfield, visited with the entire first grade at Bloomfield Elementary School in April for Teach Children to Save Day. She read a story, talked about safe places to store money, identified coins, did coin math worksheets, and talked about saving for future purchases. Each child was given a BloomBank coin bag with 41 cents (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter) to start their savings habits. The Old National Bank Foundation of Old National Bank, Evansville, is awarding an $180,000 grant to fund the construction of the Old National Bank Plaza within the Fort Wayne Riverfront project. The plaza is to be a key feature in the downtown development project and will feature a pavilion, band shell, public docks, an amphitheater, children’s play area and tree canopy trail. STAR Bank, Fort Wayne, donated $10,000 in April to support the PBS 39 WFWA Fort Wayne Capital Campaign. Centier Bank, Merrillville, has partnered with the Valparaiso University Career Center to present financial workshops. Topics covered included the basics of building credit, interpreting credit scores and budgeting. Home National Bank, Thorntown, has raised $4,113.54, donated to the Boone County Relay for Life in May. Annual fundraisers include selling candy bars and making noodles to sell before Easter and Thanksgiving. First Bank of Berne donated $6,000 in May to the Boys & Girls Club of Adams County. These funds will benefit the clubs in both Berne and Decatur. Among the programs the club promotes are Healthy Lifestyles, Academic Success, and Character & Citizenship.
