A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a graduate of Ball State University and of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. Donald E. Smith, 90, retired president and chief executive officer of First Financial Bank, NA, Terre Haute, died April 23. Under his leadership, First Financial Corp. was established in 1983 as the bank’s holding company. He joined the bank in 1967 and maintained lifelong ties to motor racing. Smith was director of competition for the Terre Haute Action Track from 1951 to 1980, and in 1952 he and a partner formed Su-Mar Racing. In 2015, the Indiana Racing Memorial Association honored Smith and the Terre Haute Action Track with an historical marker. Smith was a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club. HB Michael L. Cox, 72, past chair of the Indiana Bankers Association and retired president and chief executive officer of First Merchants Bank, Muncie, died May 24. He began his career with Merchants National Bank in 1970 and later served with City Securities Corp. and Ontario Corp. before joining First Merchants in 1994 as executive vice president and chief operating officer. Cox retired as president and CEO in 2007. He was active with multiple organizations, including I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Cardinal Health System, Pathologists Associated, Primary Care Delivery Corp., Ball State University Foundation, YMCA, Muncie Rotary Club, Muncie Redevelopment Commission, Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Delaware County, Ball State University Alumni Council, Boy Scouts of America, WIPB-TV, Muncie Children’s Museum, Cornerstone Center for the Arts, Minnetrista Cultural Center, Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Goodwill IN MEMORY OF DEPARTMENTS William J. Goodwin, chief credit officer of MainSource Financial Group Inc., Greensburg, has retired. He joined MainSource Bank in 2009 with over 25 years of banking experience in commercial lending, credit administration and mortgage banking. Steve Bechman, Johnson County market president of Horizon Bank, Michigan City, has retired. He began his career at Bargersville State Bank in 1975 and held positions in collections, commercial lending and as market president. In 1997 he and three colleagues launched Heartland Community Bank, which in 2012 was sold to Horizon Bank. Active in the community, Bechman has served as board member and president for the Franklin Chamber of Commerce and United Way. Additionally he served on the boards of the Johnson Memorial Health Foundation and of the Indiana 4-H Foundation. Bechman is a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club. Martha Janssen, Hoosier Heartland State Bank, Crawfordsville, has retired after 39 years of service. She was honored with an open house at the New Ross branch. Dan Wisley, chief financial officer of ClearPoint Federal Bank & Trust, Batesville, has retired after more than 15 years of service. HB TAKING IT EASY
