It’s not like block chain technology, where you don’t know who is behind a secure transaction. We know exactly what’s going on, which is part of the monitoring services that we provide.” In an article published last year by Cincinnati.com, you were quoted as envisioning a future where ‘Fifth Third branches have no teller desk, where applications and other records are immediately digitized and where customers seamlessly interact with on-site associates, teleconference with specialists in other cities and execute more transactions on their mobile phones.’ Is that future now a reality? “That future is now. As a matter of fact, in the market we sit in today, everything is digitized at the point of introduction into the banking center. “We still have teller lines in our legacy branches, but any new branch that we’re building is a branch of the future. Those future branches have fewer teller lines, and banker desks that are ‘open office’ style, which are very approachable immediately upon entering the branch. The new branches also have smart ATMs that provide additional functionality, such as higher withdrawal limits, custom denomination selection, and deposit with cashback as a single transaction. “Many of our smart ATMs are located in a vestibule situation, so that at night they can be locked away from the banking center, and still be accessible to customers. Everything just described here, we have implemented in some fashion, so the future is now.” HB VIDEO BONUS Greg D. Carmichael, president and CEO of Fifth Third Bancorp, explains how Zelle aligns with consumer expectations.
