46 SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2017 DEPARTMENTS BANKING ON COMMUNITY Horizon Bank, Michigan City, presented 11 area students with scholarships of $1,000 each on April 25 at the annual scholastic achievement awards luncheon of the Urban League of Northwest Indiana Inc. The scholarships were based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and future potential, and the application process was administered through a partnership with the Urban League of NWI Inc., along with community leaders. First Savings Bank, Clarksville, donated $1,500 in June to the Rotary Club of Clarksville “I Like Me” book program, which provides personalized books to every kindergarten student in Clarksville, Parkwood and St. Anthony Elementary schools, for a total of more than 200 students. Each book comes with a study guide complementing classroom life lessons on a variety of topics, including selfworth, healthy lifestyle choices, the importance of sharing and work ethic. DeMotte State Bank has donated $15,000 to the Jasper Foundation Inc. to help fund new playground equipment at Spencer Park in DeMotte. The donation was made in honor of the bank’s 100th anniversary. Peoples Bank, Munster, has partnered with the Legacy Foundation to provide scholarships to three high school graduates or students enrolled in post-secondary accredited college or university to be awarded $1,000 each for two students, and $500 for one student, for tuition fees and book expenses. Applicants must reside in Lake or Porter counties and within a low/moderate-income household. This year’s recipients were awarded in June at an awards banquet. iAB Financial Bank, Fort Wayne, a division of First Merchants Bank, Muncie, donated $1,500 in May to the Jyothi Corporation for use in its mission of providing assistance for the disenfranchised, the disabled, the feeble, the poor, as well as the homeless locally, regionally and internationally. In July, the bank served as a corporate sponsor for the Wells County Youth for Christ (YFC) Golf Outing in Bluffton, and presented YFC with a $1,000 donation. iAB and YFC are partnering to work with young people in the community, encouraging them to develop and sustain lives of faith and service. The PNC Foundation of PNC Bank, NA, has awarded a $250,000 grant for the building of PNC Playground, a 4,500-square-foot playground to be built in the riverfront Promenade Park of Fort Wayne. Scheduled for completion by spring 2019, the playground complements “PNC Grow Up Great,” the company’s early education program for children from birth to age 5, and marks the first phase of a $26 million riverfront development project in Fort Wayne. Alliance Bank, Francesville, awards $6,000 in scholarships annually to area high school students. This past spring, the bank awarded scholarships to students at Benton Central, Twin Lakes, West Central and Winamac Community high schools. One scholar is enrolled to attend Manchester University, and the other three are attending Purdue University.
