Hoosier Banker 41 Harry J. Bailey, 75, retired director of Ameriana Bancorp, New Castle, died Sept. 11. He was a past chairman of both the Indiana Bankers Association and of the Indiana League of Savings Institutions. Bailey’s banking career began in 1969 with First Federal of Chicago, through which he became the youngest general counsel in the United States. He also served the bank as vice president and corporate secretary. In 1984 Bailey came to Indiana as executive vice president and director of Henry County Savings, New Castle, which later became Ameriana Savings Bank; Bailey served as a director of Ameriana Bancorp. He additionally served as director, president and CEO of American Financial Services Inc., Ameriana Insurance Agency Inc. and Family Financial Holdings Inc. He retired from Ameriana Bancorp in 2005. Bailey’s community leadership included the Class Action Committee of the Illinois Savings and Loan League, Henry County Hospital, the New Castle/Henry County Economic Development Corp., the United Fund of Henry County, the United Way of Henry County, the Henry County Community Foundation and the Henry County Youth Center. He also served as a director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis and of American Bank of Ohio. Bailey attended the Society of St. Vincent de Paul seminary, then earned an undergraduate degree from DePaul University and a JD from the DePaul University School of Law. A member of the IBA 40 Year Club, Bailey was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash. Paul N. Dinkins, 97, past president and director of Irwin Union Bank and Trust Company, Columbus, died Aug. 21. He joined the bank in 1938 and served as president and director from 1964 to 1975, as chairman and director from 1975 to 1977, and as a consultant and director until his retirement in 1985. Dinkins served the Indiana Bankers Association as president in 1972-73. He also was active with the American Bankers Association, Columbus City Council, Columbus City Planning Commission, Columbus Redevelopment Commission, Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus, the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, Columbus Growth, Columbus Economic Development Commission, the William R. Laws Foundation and RMA. Additionally Dinkins served with the United Way, Red Cross and Kiwanis. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945, stationed in Chicago and the South Pacific. Dinkins was a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club. Clement B. “Skip” Knapp Jr., 75, chairman of AMB Financial Corp., Munster, died Sept. 21. He began his banking career in 1968 at American Savings and Loan Association, Munster, and was appointed president and chief operating officer in 1978. Among other activities, Knapp established the Habitat Foundation of Lake County and served on the Georgetown University board of admissions. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Knapp earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and a JD from the Indiana University School of Law. Additionally he was a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club. Donald L. Norman, 82, chairman of the board of The Peoples Bank, Brownstown, died Sept. 23. He was named chairman in 1978; he previously served the bank as president, retiring from that position in 2005. Norman’s banking career began when he joined Brownstown Loan & Trust – now The Peoples Bank – in 1955. He served the community as an IHSAA basketball official and was active with the Brownstown Lions Club, Brownstown Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Fair Association and Seymour Elks Lodge. Additionally he was a past board member of the Community Bankers Association of Indiana and a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club. Norman served for eight years in the Indiana National Guard and had been honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash. John H. Robertson, 78, director of The Peoples Bank, Brownstown, died June 7. He had been a board member since 1997. Robertson was retired as president from the Robertson Corp., where he was employed for more than 50 years. He was active with the Jackson County Fair Board, the Brownstown Jaycees and Seymour Elks Lodge, among other organizations. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Robertson served in Vietnam.
