Hoosier Banker 47 DEPARTMENTS In effort to transform financial literacy basics into lifelong money management skills, the First Federal Savings Bank, Rochester, sponsored a finance workshop on Sept. 8 with the Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) for teachers from Caston, Rochester, and Tippecanoe Valley schools. The purpose was to share with educators ways to implement classroom strategies to develop students’ financial competencies. Twenty-seven teachers took part in the workshop. Topics included ways to develop a classroom mini-economy, how to engage student interest through finance-related activities, and use of children’s books to teach personal finance. Financial Literacy Through ICEE At a finance workshop sponsored by First Federal Saving Bank, Rochester, Jeff Sanson, executive director of the Indiana Council for Economic Education, shares financial literacy teaching insights with area educators. First Federal Savings Bank likewise teamed up with the ICEE in 2016 to provide a K-12 professional development opportunity for area educators. The event was deemed a success, and additionally the bank earned CRA credit. The ICEE is an academic outreach center, affiliated with the national Council for Economic Education, within the Department of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University. It works with schools, bank partners and other organizations to promote education that enables students to make sound economic decisions.
