Hoosier Banker 25 The activities of the Indiana Bankers Association operate under the guidance of the Association’s board of directors. Acting as governing body of the IBA, the 21-member board consists of: three elected officers, the immediate past chair, the Association president/CEO, two national association representatives, the president of the IBA Future Leadership Division, one non-Indiana headquartered bank director, and 12 representatives from four IBA geographical regions. The functions of the board are to develop IBA policy and to establish long-range goals and objectives. Additionally the board helps determine IBA’s legislative programs and positions on banking-related issues. The IBA board acts with the same authority as the board of a bank or a corporation. An executive committee – composed of the chairman, first and second vice chairmen, immediate past chair, Association president/ CEO and two appointed directors – is authorized to act in lieu of the board between regular board meetings. Officers serve one-year terms and are elected by the entire membership at the IBA Annual Convention. Members of the 2018 board assumed their positions on Jan. 1. Following are the IBA officers: Clay W. Ewing Clay W. Ewing, IBA chairman, is president, chief banking officer and secretary to the board of directors of German American Bancorp Inc., Jasper. He has more than 35 years of banking experience, and he joined German American in 1994 as president and CEO of a subsidiary bank of the company. Ewing is active in regional economic development and currently serves as chairman of the Perry County Development Corp. and as a board member of the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana. He additionally serves on various other civic and community boards. He has served on the IBA board as first and second vice chairman and as southwest region director. Ewing is a graduate of Lockyear College and of The School for Bank Administration at the University of Wisconsin. Andrew J. Briggs Andrew J. Briggs, first vice chairman, is president and CEO of the Bank of Geneva. He represents the fifth generation of his family to serve as president of the bank. Briggs has more than 40 years of banking experience and has been serving in his current position since 1994. He is active on the following boards: Bank of Geneva, chairman; Limberlost Bancshares Inc., chairman; Indiana State Museum, treasurer; Limberlost State Historic Site, corporate secretary; Northeast Indiana Regional Development Authority, director; Adams County Economic Development, treasurer; and Adams Public Library System, treasurer. Additionally Briggs was appointed in 2017 to the Indiana Board of Depositories by Gov. Eric J. Holcomb. He is past president of the Geneva Town Council, past treasurer of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, and he has served on the IBA board as second vice chairman and as northeast region director. Briggs is a graduate of Ball State University and a member of the IBA 40 Year Club.
