Hoosier Banker 47 Centier Bank, Merrillville, and Mental Health America of Lake County (MHALC) began a financial literacy partnership in October when Mary Shelton, Centier AVP and Munster branch manager, presented Pay Yourself First to MHALC personnel during a lunchand-learn in Hammond. The presentation covered topics including the role of saving money in building a financial future. Plans are underway for additional presentations to MHALC personnel and their clientele, which primarily consists of families with children through age 5. HB First Financial Bank, Columbus, announced in October a targeted community benefits agreement with the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and partner organizations. Over the next five years, First Financial will build upon its current community involvement in several ways, including designating $8.5 million in philanthropy and $1 million in marketing for community development products and services. Additionally the bank will be dedicating funds to lending and branch distribution/access in low- to moderate-income communities, and to community development lending and investments. Centier Bank, Merrillville, presented a $25,000 donation in December to The Caring Place, to support the construction of the organization’s new $2.8 million facility. The Caring Place is a nonprofit social service organization serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Lake, Porter and Starke counties. Associates of Centier Bank also helped the American Cancer Society’s North Central Indiana Region in October by forming teams to participate in Making Strides Against Cancer. Centier Bank also was a corporate-level sponsor for Making Strides Against Cancer. Richard Kellum, 91, retired chairman of the board of Citizens Bank, Mooresville, died Oct. 23, 2017. He started his banking career with Indiana National Bank, where he worked for 23 years, then later served as president of Bank of the Commonwealth in Detroit, as president of Danville State Bank, and as senior vice president of commercial lending of Merchants Bank. Kellum was a longtime director of Citizens Bank, Mooresville, serving as chairman from 1990 to 1996. After retirement from banking, he became a full-time farmer of the family farm where he had grown up. Kellum was active with the American Bankers Association, Mooresville Consolidated School Board, the Hoosier Capital Girl Scout Council and Henderson Settlement mission. A veteran of the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a master’s degree from Indiana University. Kellum was a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club.
