Home Bank, Martinsville, in December selected Brooklyn Elementary School – of the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville – as the recipient for a $30,000 donation through the bank’s community gifting program. The gift provides complete funding for construction of an outdoor classroom in support of the school’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) integrated curriculum program. In 2012 the board of directors of Home Bank established its gifting program, through which 10 percent of the organization’s profits are allocated for donation to nonprofits working to address community challenges. The donation is for the purchase of gymnasium bleacher end covers, which are safety enclosures that cap the sides of the bleachers. PNC Bank, NA, Indianapolis, has teamed with Anderson Community Schools to launch PNC School Bank programs in several classrooms. The initiative is a partnership between PNC and local schools that allows students to open real savings accounts, while providing them with hands-on experience with the banking system. The program was created to teach elementary and middle school students positive financial habits, beginning with on-site educational workshops facilitated by PNC staff. Eastside Elementary School was the first in Indiana to roll out the program in November 2017. Several other elementary and middle schools will be participating through May 2018. PNC launched the PNC School Bank program in 2008 in schools serving low-to-moderate income families; PNC currently works with 94 schools, serving more than 2,000 students across its corporate footprint. Farmers State Bank, LaGrange, in January donated $750 from its third Blue Button Jean-erosity effort from last year to the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging, and $750 to the Council on Aging of Elkhart County. The Zionsville and Whitestown branches of Centier Bank, Merrillville, held food drives in December, collecting more than 350 pounds of food for The Caring Center, a nonprofit social service organization that distributes food and clothing to those in need, plus provides education on cooking, budgeting and healthy living. The food donation was paired with a $1,000 donation to the center.
