48 MARCH / APRIL 2018 Andrew J. Paine Jr., 80, retired president and CEO of NBD Bank, NA, and executive vice president of First Chicago NBD Corp., died Jan. 29. He retired in 1998 following a 37-year career in banking. Paine additionally served as president and chief operating officer of Indiana National Bank, and he was a member of the boards of directors of Indiana National Corp., AmerUs Group, Indianapolis Life Insurance Company, Bankers Life of New York, Indianapolis Power & Light Co. and IPALCO Enterprises. He served in leadership positions with the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, Indiana State Symphony Society, the Circle City Classic, United Way of Central Indiana, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, Junior Achievement of Central Indiana, Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. He was a graduate of DePauw University, which in 2000 awarded Paine the Old Gold Goblet, among other alumni awards. Additional honors granted to Paine were three Sagamores of the Wabash, the Indianapolis Jaycees Key Man Award, the Junior Achievement Gold Leadership Award, the Thomas B. Moses Good Scout Award, and induction into the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame. James H. Greiner, 73, past president and CEO of Hobart Savings Bank, died Dec. 23, 2017. He served the Indiana League of Savings Institutions as 1994-95 chairman and in his bank leadership position for 25 years. Greiner was a former member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis and Legacy Foundation; past president of the Hobart Chamber of Commerce, Hobart and Munster Rotary clubs, American Cancer Society of Northwest Indiana, and Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana; past chairman of WYIN Public Television Station; and a former board member of Lake Area United Way, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana. He was a graduate of Valparaiso University. Paul William “P.W.” Prior Sr., 96, past president and chairman of Ameriana IN MEMORY OF Bank, New Castle, died Jan. 2. He served as 1961-62 chairman of the Indiana League of Savings Institutions and as 1984 chairman of the U.S. League of Savings Institutions. Prior began his banking career with Citizens Fidelity Bank and Trust, Louisville, Kentucky, then later served as CEO of Fidelity Federal Savings, Seymour, and as president and chairman of Henry County Savings and Loan Association, New Castle. He was a director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce, of the Henry County Hospital Foundation and of the Board of Associated Colleges of Indiana. Prior was a founding member of the New Castle/Henry County Economic Development Commission and a member of the New Castle Rotary Club. Additionally he was instrumental in locating the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame to New Castle. Prior was twice named a Sagamore of the Wabash, twice named a Kentucky Colonel, was honored as Citizen of the Year in both New Castle and Seymour, and was a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a combat pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Ralph L. Spurgeon, 91, director emeritus of The Peoples Bank, Brownstown, died Jan. 28. He retired from banking in 1991 as president of First National Bank, Brownstown, but continued board service to age 90. Spurgeon was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the World War II Pacific Theater, specifically in the Philippines. He continued his service as a commander of the American Legion and served on the military memorial squad for over 50 years. Spurgeon was a member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club.
