2018 Vol. 102 No. 6

22 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2018 This past fall, Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, the Indiana Bankers Association hosted a total of 67 people, including 44 bankers, in our nations’ capital for the IBA Annual Washington Trip. This fly-in event is one of the most significant and impactful components of IBA’s engagement in the national political process, providing bankers with prime opportunities to talk with those who can have a significant impact on the banking industry. This year’s scheduled was packed with meaningful meetings and included several unique experiences that made the trip an even more memorable one. Notable highlights included a lengthy conversation with Jelena McWilliams, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.; a private dinner and evening tour of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate; and a rare opportunity to visit the House floor, compliments of Congressmen Jim Banks and Larry Bucshon. There were a number of pertinent issues for discussion this year, both at the regulatory and legislative levels. Input on reforming and updating both the Bank Secrecy Act and the Community Reinvestment Act were top of mind for federal regulators, as well as several lawmakers. Data security and ensuring appropriate liability with data breaches, discussing concerns related to the outdated tax-free subsidy afforded to credit unions, and asking for some type of Congressional legislative action to protect the industry from the increasing problem of marijuana and banking were at the forefront of many congressional discussions. Most importantly, we took the opportunity to thank those legislators who supported S. 2155 with their votes this past spring. Business meetings began early on Monday, Oct. 1, with briefings from issue experts from both the American Bankers Association and the Independent Community Bankers of America. Following was a panel discussion that included Jim Cooper of the Commission of State Banking Supervisors; well-known to IBA bankers, Cooper previously served as deputy director of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. The afternoon brought meetings with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Bureau of Consumer Financial GR SUMMIT Dax Denton Senior Vice PresidentGovernment Relations Indiana Bankers Association ddenton@indianabankers.org @ibagovrelations IBA Annual Washington Trip 2018 Fruitful trip to nation’s capital
