Funds were used in part for the “Soup Bowl” benefit in February at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. David Bedwell, Horizon Bank market president of Johnson County, presented the grant to Lee Ann Wilbur, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Johnson County, at the bank’s Franklin branch. Alliance Bank, Francesville, presented a check for $1,480 to Courage Rock Stable, Monticello, on Jan. 9. The donation represents individual employee contributions that were matched by the bank. Courage Rock Stable was established in 2012 in memory of the founders’ son, who died in a fire while serving in the U.S. Army. The facility offers veterans and military families the opportunity to learn horsemanship and animal care, which can alleviate stress, anxiety and depression. STAR Bank, Fort Wayne, and its employees raised $113,000 through the 2019 United Way giving campaign. United Way of Central Indiana received funds, along with the United Ways of the following counties: Adams, Allen, Dekalb, Delaware, Grant, Henry, Howard, Huntington, Madison, Noble, Steuben, Tipton, Wabash, Wells and Whitley. A grant from Horizon Bank, Michigan City, to Habitat for Humanity of Johnson County was used in part to support a Habitat “Soup Bowl” benefit in February. Melanie McGuin (left), Alliance Bank office manager, presents a donation to Kim Markham, co-founder of Courage Rock Stable, Monticello. In lieu of hosting a year-end holiday gathering for staff and directors, Bath State Bank utilized those funds for a Random Act of Kindness contest among its employees, who were invited to nominate a charity or entity of choice for a one-time donation of $100. Six organizations were selected as recipients: - Luna Cares Fund was nominated by Michelle Brier. It provides free support to those undergoing cancer treatment, such as hair styling, makeup and more. - College Corner Food Pantry was nominated by Beth Petty. The assistance goal was to help with funding needs during the post-holiday season. - Quintin, a six-year-old boy from Oxford, was nominated by Krissy Myers. His family has experienced high medical expenses associated with aggressive leukemia. - Oxford Community Choice Pantry was nominated by Cindy Hampton. The donation is to help alleviate shortages in personal care items. - Shriner’s Hospital for Children was nominated by Annette Meier. The organization helps children with medical needs. - Ayla Lou’s Butterflies was nominated by Scott McCarty. The organization, named for a child who died in a farm accident, helps area children afford extracurricular activities that might otherwise not be available to them. HB STAR Bank employees gather for a check presentation to David Nicole, executive director of United Way of Allen County. The Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) works to improve the financial literacy of Hoosier students by training K-12 educators to teach students age-appropriate economic lessons through programming and activities, including Gen i Revolution, an online learning game. Banks have the opportunity to partner with the ICEE in support of area schools. For more information, contact J.W. Fansler, ICEE assistant director, at 765-494-8544, jwfansle@purdue.edu.
