20 SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019 GR SUMMIT The Indiana Bankers Association’s 20182020 strategic plan has paved the way for new programs and offerings to help engage members and boost the overall effectiveness of the Association. Two offerings included in the plan which will contribute to that effort are the Key Contact Bankers and Ambassadors of Strategic Advocacy programs. Geared toward grassroots advocacy, these programs provide additional tools to the IBA Government Relations Team to complement lobbying efforts. Here is a closer look at those programs and how you can participate. Key Contact Bankers Your voice is critical to shaping public policy. To advance our grassroots advocacy capabilities, the IBA is working to create a database of banker legislative contacts for future outreach. The IBA Key Contact Bankers program will enhance IBA’s overall grassroots strategy moving forward. This new program is designed to elevate that voice in the political arena by maximizing existing relationships bankers may have with state and federal legislators. When issues arise where increased member support is needed, the GR Team may request engagement from Key Contact Bankers. The impact can make a real difference when grassroots advocacy efforts are called upon in the future. The success of this program lies with your help in identifying meaningful relationships. Following is a guidance list of relationships that may be relevant for purposes of the program. Any strong and meaningful relationship with a policymaker is noteworthy and could help make an impact when the discussion on a legislative topic arises. Do you or your associates have any of the following relationships with legislators? • Family members; • Close business relationships; • Long-term family friends or personal friends; • Political and campaign supporters; • Legislators directly employed or serving on the bank board. To identify Key Contact Bankers, contact Josh Myers at 317-333-7165, jmyers@indianabankers.org. Ambassadors of Strategic Advocacy ASAs (formerly known as BANKPAC captains) are the primary contacts for initiatives regarding Indiana BANKPAC fundraising efforts. Each ASA receives all Indiana BANKPAC materials and is responsible for coordinating the bank’s efforts in its fundraising campaign. In addition, this new role receives all IBA grassroots advocacy alerts and coordinates the bank’s efforts in engaging other bank employees in participating broadly in grassroots, thereby increasing the industry’s effectiveness in grassroots advocacy. It is the goal of the IBA to have one individual from each member financial institution designated as an ASA. Simply put, this ASA designation is for the individual in your financial institution that you feel is best suited to manage the external government relations efforts on behalf of the IBA. Primary responsibilities of ASAs are to: • Act as the conduit for organizing and growing the presence of the Indiana BANKPAC inside each institution; • Receive all Indiana BANKPAC materials, and be responsible for coordinating the bank’s fundraising campaign; • Receive all IBA grassroots advocacy alerts, and coordinate efforts to engage other bank employees; • Identify meaningful relationships between legislators and bankers.
