2020 Vol. 104 No. 2

54 MARCH / APRIL 2020 IBA Board Review Meet IBA’s newest board member Melodie K. Yarnell Future Leadership Division President Indiana Bankers Association SVP, Chief Risk and Management Services Officer Jackson County Bank, Seymour Dear IBA Members, Thank you for the opportunity to serve on the Indiana Bankers Association Board of Directors. I have the honor of serving on the board for one year in the capacity as president of the IBA Future Leadership Division. As FLD president, my goals this year are to continue to promote the division and grow its membership, which is now approximately 400 strong. We’ll be adding some new events in 2020 to increase networking and educational opportunities. Additionally, we will continue to promote grassroots advocacy. I believe it’s important for emerging leaders to learn about government relations and the impact of the legislative process to the banking industry, which is an area I knew little about when I joined banking in 1995. I began my banking career as a teller at River City Bank in Louisville and transitioned to loan payment teller, and then to the loan processing and closing area. In 1998 my husband and I moved to Columbus, Indiana, at which time I joined Citizens Bank of Central Indiana as administrative assistant for consumer lending, then transitioned into mortgage processing. Other banks I’ve worked with are Irwin Union Bank and Trust Company and Heartland Community Bank. My experience with those banks includes loan processing and closing, loan operations, human resources and electronic banking. With the different banking organizations, I was offered many opportunities to get involved in different areas of the bank, which has served me well in my current position. I joined JCB (Jackson County Bank) in 2012 and currently serve as senior vice president, chief risk and management services officer, a position I’ve held since 2018. In this position, I am directly responsible for our regulatory compliance and CRA programs, enterprise risk management program, and all physical and personal security. Also under my umbrella is BSA, facilities and purchasing, and human resources. Fortunately, I have some great leaders in those areas that do a phenomenal job leading some very important functions of the bank. Lastly, I serve as secretary to our board. Banking wasn’t my original plan. Growing up on a farm and working with large animals, I enrolled at Western Kentucky University as a pre-vet major. Life took a happy turn at Western Kentucky, where I met my husband, Troy. We were married in 1997, and the next year moved to Columbus, Indiana, for a career opportunity for Troy. At that point, I transferred to Indiana Wesleyan University and changed my major to business. I earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and have an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan. Family life is great. Troy is a golf course superintendent at Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh, Indiana. We have two sons, Bryce and Braden. Bryce, 19, is employed at Comcast. He’s just now getting out into the real world, experiencing adult life and learning. Braden, our 16-year-old, plays baseball at Columbus North High School and also on a travel team. Our free time in the spring, summer and fall are spent at the baseball field watching Braden play. The four-legged members of our family are Chachi, our cat, and our dogs Millie, Mimi and Sam. As often as we can, we visit my family in Kentucky. I grew up on a farm about 60 miles west of Louisville, where we raised tobacco, grain, hay, cattle and hogs. My parents and three of my four siblings still farm in Kentucky. I have my dad and mom to thank for my work ethic, and both of the boys love working on the farm, too. The banking industry is wonderful work. Being exposed to different areas of banking, I feel I’ve developed a good foundation for how the financial system works, not only in banking but also out in the world. Banking is a good career choice for young professionals. HB
