6 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 Greetings, and welcome to 2021. My guess is that everyone is looking at this year with an extra dose of hope and optimism, tempered with an urge to forget 2020. Let’s not dismiss last year so quickly, though, that we overlook the good that came from it. Instead, let’s remember 2020 as the year that we survived and thrived, all at the same time. Indiana banks accomplished a great deal through the trials of 2020. Topping the list is that you helped to bring nearly $10 billion in support to Indiana small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program. It was no small feat to process volumes of loans under a tight deadline, but you did it. You also donated much time, treasure and talent to helping community organizations, individuals and families in need. Those needs were enormous, but lessened through the support you provided. At the Indiana Bankers Association, we logged some accomplishments, too. We continued to retain all Indiana-headquartered banks as members, maintained a robust associate member base, reached thousands of bankers through education and training, successfully transitioned convening events to an online format, researched hundreds of pieces of legislation on your behalf, raised significant Indiana BANKPAC dollars and kept communications in flow. In the next-gen bankers arena, we saw the establishment of two banking minors in Indiana, kept our BankLEAD internship program up and running, and increased Future Leadership Division engagement. Additionally, we documented these achievements with more videos than we have ever produced before. Regarding banking minors, we greatly appreciate the opportunity to partner with Purdue University Northwest and Ball State University. In addition to offering banking minors, PNW initiated a banking concentration in 2019, and Ball State dedicated a room in its business school last fall to the IBA. See page 29 for a photo from the room dedication. Throughout all the ups and downs of 2020, your IBA remained fiscally solvent, ending the year far better than we had hoped. That kind of quantifiable success comes from the combined efforts of our bank members, associate members, IBA Board of Directors' guidance and IBA staff. I’d like to offer a special thank you to those associate members that were our IMPACT Players – Industry Makers Pledging Assistance, Cooperation & Togetherness. Also, a shout out goes to Rod Lasley, who spearheaded this opportunity. A list of IMPACT Players is shown on page 8. Now for 2021, while we don’t yet know exactly how it will play out, we do know that good news is around the corner. With widespread vaccinations on the horizon, plans are in place for the convening events that we all enjoy. :%28%+) :-);43-28 (SRŭX 1MWW 3YX The Don’t Miss Out box on this page gives dates for some of our larger events. You’ll notice that the Annual Convention is set for August this year, with the Mega Conference scheduled in October. Since Mega is so large, we felt it should take place later in the year rather than in May, to give more time for a return to normal. We’ll also be celebrating Leaders in Banking Excellence in 2021 – twice. Last year we inducted a record class of 10 members of exemplary banking leaders. Due to social distancing, we opted to wait for this year to recognize them, so we can present the Leaders in Banking Excellence awards in person. In addition, we’ll be inaugurating a new class of Leaders in Banking Excellence in coming months. See the announcement on page 3 for details on how to nominate someone from your organization for IBA’s highest honor. Also this year we plan to build on the success of the Commitment to Community award program by collecting nominations for bank community outreach in 2020. Visit indiana.bank/commitment-community-award to read more about the C2C awards, or see the announcement on page 51. Again, on behalf of the IBA team, welcome to 2021. Last year was a wild ride, yet also a privilege to partner with you. We look forward to working with you again this year. Hoosier Banker Thank you for electing me as 2021 chairman of the Indiana Bankers Association. If serving last year as first vice chairman was supposed to train me for anything, it did! It was quite a year. But we got through it, and we did it together. It was teamwork at your bank that kept you serving your communities, and it’s teamwork in this industry that keeps Indiana banks united. At the center of our banking family stands the IBA. This past year has demonstrated how vital our Association is. Throughout 2020, the IBA kept up a steady level of communications. The Paycheck Protection Program is a perfect example. PPP changed almost daily, but the IBA kept us current. In the area of education, the IBA continued nonstop with quality offerings. My employees were able to participate in a number of educational offerings and events, thanks to IBA’s switch to a virtual format. IBA’s largest events of the year, the Mega Conference and Annual Convention, were successfully repurposed into the online Mega Reimagined event. The IBA Annual Washington Trip, too, was able to take place through a series of Zoom meetings. Which brings me to the topic of advocacy. First, kudos to the IBA Government Relations team for providing us with a voice that is heard both at the Statehouse and on the federal level. The IBA has earned a high level of respect among legislators and regulators alike. Second, if you haven’t been active in grassroots advocacy before, now is the time to jump in. We’ll be facing many issues this year for which a banking perspective is critical. The more voices that join in, the stronger the message. Topics we may be addressing in coming months include federal stimulus, PPP loans, updated social distancing criteria and the vaccination rollout. It’s good news that COVID-19 vaccines are available, but there may be as many questions as answers. Overall our biggest challenge is facing the unknown. How will another round of PPP loans function? When will we reach a new normal? What will a new normal look like? But the IBA was there for us in 2020 and remains with us now, keeping us united. We have strength in unity. We also have strength in an impressive history. Many of our banks, mine included, have been around long enough to have weathered the pandemic of 1918, two world wars, the Great Depression, several recessions and multiple other challenges. You are part of that history – whether your bank is a century old or a quarter-century old – because we share a collective institutional history. That history has brought us to the year 2021, working together to support the communities we serve. So thank you again for electing me to chair the IBA. I follow many capable leaders going back to 1897, each who left an imprint on this Association. One of those leaders is my father, Stephen E. Zahn, who served as 1996-97 chairman of the Indiana League of Savings Institutions, which later merged with the IBA. My father is my mentor, so it’s a double honor to follow in his footsteps. He in turn was inspired by his father, William E. Zahn, who was named president of First Federal Savings Bank in 1963. Those of you who are from banking families can understand that, for me, banking is more than a job or even a career. It’s a family legacy to uphold. I’d also like to thank my wonderful wife, Susan, and our three boys who make me proud every day. I’m a very lucky person at home and at work, surrounded by people I admire. I look forward to working with you in this new year. 10 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 '3:)6 7836= Mike Zahn Standing tall as IBA chairman When elected as 2021 chairman of the Indiana Bankers Association, Michael S. Zahn made history as the first IBA leader elected in a virtual format. Officer elections normally take place during the IBA Annual Convention in September, but pandemic restrictions moved elections to the online Mega Reimagined event in November. Zahn was officially elected 2021 IBA chairman on Nov. 18, 2020, and assumed duties effective Jan. 1 of this year. He is president and CEO of First Federal Savings Bank, Huntington, the third generation of his family to lead the institution. His grandfather, William E. Zahn, was named president in 1963, and his father, Stephen E. Zahn, became president and CEO in 1980. Mike Zahn joined the bank in 1996, was named president in 2005, and became CEO in 2011. Active in the community, Zahn serves on the boards of Huntington County Economic Development and Huntington University Foundation, for which he also is a past president. Additionally, he is a former trustee of Huntington University and has served in leadership capacity with organizations including the United Way of Huntington Capital Campaign, the Bowen Center, the Optimist Club, Parkview Huntington YMCA, Huntington County Junior Achievement, Huntington County Chamber of Commerce and Lime City Economic Development. A longtime supporter of the IBA, Zahn has served the Association as first vice chairman, second vice chairman and northeast region director. He earned an undergraduate degree from Indiana University and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. Hoosier Banker had the opportunity to interview Zahn last fall. What are your goals as IBA chairman, and how does the pandemic affect plans for 2021? “As the 2021 IBA chairman, my first goal is to continue to build on the solid foundation established by the previous chairs. Through these difficult times, the banking industry has stood tall, served our communities and helped those in need. “The IBA was vital to our industry, providing guidance and direction. It’s really just my job to keep things moving forward. “I’m hopeful that in 2021 we are able to take advantage of everything the IBA has to offer. Generally, we address the challenges of asset quality, interest rate risk, regulation and a host of other issues unique to the banking industry. COVID-19 made us change our focus dramatically. “My most important responsibility during the pandemic has been keeping our staff and customers safe. All of us have taken extraordinary steps to do the best we can in this endeavor, and I would guess a day does not go by where this topic is not discussed. “Our staff and customers and their families are our most valuable asset. We have to do all we can to protect them.” For your bank’s community outreach, how do you determine where to devote resources? “We take pride in our efforts to make the communities we serve the best they can be. Whether it is with time, talent or treasure, we are committed and understand our role. When determining where to devote our resources, we listen to the needs of the community. “We currently operate in three markets, and each one is a little different with different needs. Working

12 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 closely with the social service agencies in each community better equips us with the understanding of the unmet needs.” Your father and grandfather also were leaders at First Federal Savings Bank. Why did you decide to devote your career to banking? “I am very fortunate to work in a great industry, and even more blessed to have the opportunity to work with my father. Growing up in a small town with both my grandfather and father in the banking industry, I was able to witness firsthand the positive impact a community bank can make. “My grandfather and father were bankers. This was almost more than just a vocation. Like many of us in this industry, we never really take our banking hats off. “Even today, I talk to people who mention my grandfather gave them their first loan to buy a home. Or a customer mentions to me that my father helped them start their small business. “I take great pride in what my grandfather and father have been able to accomplish as bankers in a small town, and I try to do my very best to meet the high standards they set serving our community and our customers.” What would you like for bankers who are not involved with the IBA to know about the Association? “The IBA offers bankers an abundance of opportunity. I see the IBA as a tool that will make me a better banker. Whether it is through education, advocacy, promoting our industry or attracting next-gen bankers, the IBA is focused on serving our industry. “As a new banker in the late ’90s, the opportunities to connect and learn from other bankers at IBA events was invaluable. The network that I was able to create by attending classes, conferences and volunteering for committees has made me a much better banker and given me lifelong friends and colleagues. “We are truly lucky to have an Association that provides our industry so much.” How can the IBA help the Indiana banking community adapt to future needs? “One area that is very impressive about the IBA is the staff’s ability to stay at the forefront of emerging topics and issues. I do my best to stay on top of issues at the state and federal levels, but often I've received correspondence about an issue from the IBA before I even knew there was an issue. “The respect and clout the IBA staff have earned over the years allow them into rooms with decision-makers. This means bankers have a seat at the table. This is the best way the IBA can continue to help bankers in the future.” When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun? “I may be the most stereotypical banker. When I’m not working, which I really enjoy, I can normally be found on the golf course. It probably is less about the golf, as I’m not very good, and more about the opportunity to spend time outside with good friends. “The only thing better than a great round of golf with great people would be spending time with my family. With three boys, I’ve spent countless hours at practices and games and would not trade a minute of it. I understand at some point these days will ,SRSVW ERH EGEHIQMG HMTPSQEW GSZIV [EPP WTEGI MR 1MOI >ELRŭW SJƤGI

JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 ARTICLE SPOTLIGHT Mega and Convention combined in 2020

Hoosier Banker 15 How many times can the Indiana Bankers Association plan one conference? For Mega 2020, the number seemed to be endless. The original conference was scheduled for May at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. In early March, we thought we would be quarantined for two weeks, and that there was plenty of time to get back to business before the May event. Boy, were we ever wrong. As 2020 wore on, we added in the IBA annual meeting as we planned and replanned our flagship events. Through spring and early summer, the IBA Board of Directors remained optimistic about being able to hold a live event in 2020. But as the pandemic raged through July, we were rethinking, and by September we made the tough decision to transition to virtual. The goal of the event was to provide the education that our members need, but also to create a connection, something many of us were lacking in 2020. And these times certainly challenged us to see things differently – to do things differently – yet in the end, achieve the same: create and nurture a strong community of banking professionals who learn and grow through shared experiences, exceptional educational opportunities, and superior banking products and services. On Nov. 16-18, more than 700 IBA members joined us for Mega Reimagined. The event featured three keynotes who were specifically selected to be virtual. Holly Hoffman kicked us off with her message of “Lead Simply,” while Erik Qualman presented on digital leadership, and Dr. Stephen Happel gave us a glimpse into the post-Trump economy. Each year, the Association is required to hold an annual meeting, which is typically accomplished at the Annual Convention. IBA records show that only two times in our 123-year history have we not held an annual convention, and both of those were during world wars. We definitely made history in 2020, holding our first-ever virtual annual meeting. IBA 2020 Chairman Lucas White was joined by 2021 Chairman Mike Zahn and President and CEO Amber Van Til to review the year. Lucas characterized 2020 as “a dumpster fire,” but proudly said he successfully accomplished his goal of visiting all Indiana-based member banks – although he was thankful to have started in the fall of 2019. Lucas was recognized as a Sagamore of the Wabash, with the award presented by Director Tom Fite of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. We also elected officers for 2021, as Mike Zahn was elected chairman, with Garry Kleer and Jamie Shinabarger elected first and second vice chairmen, respectively. We presented 40 concurrent sessions, with many of the topics changing because of the pandemic. The virtual presentations were well attended and were also available to attendees on-demand through year-end. Associate members stepped up big for Mega Reimagined, and most every session had its own sponsor, with the sponsor providing a short video and/or introducing the speakers. More than 50 exhibitors created inviting virtual exhibit booths to welcome attendees. We gave away lots of prizes, and we were also able to hold the traditional Future Leadership Division silent auction to benefit Indiana BANKPAC, raising $16,360. Overall, the comments from the 2020 event were positive, with many expressing the hope that we will gather in person in 2021. Plans are already being made for live events this year. Please mark your calendar for new event dates in 2021. This year we plan to host the Annual Convention Aug. 15-17 in French Lick, and the Mega Conference Oct. 11-13 in Indianapolis. We can’t wait to see you all! HB 'LVMWXMRE 1 &IRRIXX '14 Vice President - Meetings & Events Indiana Bankers Association cbennett@indiana.bank @cbennettin

20 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 – Dorothy Dandridge There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise FEATURE

Hoosier Banker 21 The 2020 Banking on Women Conference moved from a physical event to a virtual conference. Just as this conference encourages women bankers to do, the Indiana Bankers Association chose to push forward and rise up with a virtual offering. This presented an opportunity to connect and deliver attendees the rich experience they expect from the Banking on Women Conference with the flexibility of the virtual world. In planning this event, we knew that changing to a virtual format meant that content was king, and attendee engagement was critical to success. The event, held virtually Oct. 22-23, drew attendance of 239 women coming together for professional development, networking and inspiration. Attendees joined the conference on Thursday, Oct. 22, and delved into a day packed with powerhouse presentations. Lisa Arnold of Home Bank, Martinsville, chair of the conference planning committee, welcomed guests and offered opening remarks on the uplifting spirit of the Banking on Women Conference. Morning sessions began with a thought-provoking presentation by emcee Juli Lynch, Ph.D., a perennial favorite from the previous three conferences and the IBA Leadership Development Program. In “RISE UP: The Emerging Paradigm of Feminine Power, Influence and Wisdom Taking Precedence in a New World,” Lynch shared insights on four guiding emotional mindsets to elevate power, influence and wisdom. Ensuing presentations were “Every Generation Matters: Why Building Multi-Generational Teams Is the Future of Work” presented by Lindsay Boccardo of Lindsay Boccardo Training & Coaching; and “Getting Grit – Putting Passion, Perseverance and Purpose to Work” presented by Caroline Adams Miller, author and media personality. Another conference highlight was the online mixology event that gave the women of the conference an opportunity to network and learn something new. Big Machine Vodka’s mixologist taught attendees how to create seasonal signature drinks. This session was an interactive and social way to wrap up the end of Day One of the conference. Prior to the conference, each registrant received a “celebration box” via U.S. mail, filled with autumn-themed goodies – including ingredients for the mixology mixer. The boxes were filled with an array of other treats, such as cake bites, pumpkin spice sachet, hand sanitizer, lip balms and Starbucks gift cards. Additionally, the boxes featured a gift bag of candies and hot apple cider mix. Thank you to our sponsors who generously donated gift box items. Speaking of sponsors, this conference would not be the same without the offering of our exhibit area, where attendees were able to visit with service providers. Exhibitors and sponsors had customized virtual landing pages where attendees could interact and learn about each provider’s products and services. Throughout the conference, exhibitors demonstrated how they can be of service to attendees through exhibitor showcase videos. The Banking on Women planning committee once again chose Ascent 121 as the beneficiary of the proceeds for this year’s silent auction. Ascent 121 is a faithbased agency that provides long-term trauma recovery services for teen survivors of sex trafficking, along with an entire continuum of care. Named after Psalm 121, Ascent 121 has served more than 300 survivors in Indiana since its establishment in 2013. The online auction raised a total of $5,000. Friday, Oct. 23, began bright and early with rise-andshine yoga. Presentations included: “Help and Serve Your Customers in a Virtual World NOW & Seamlessly Transition Back to Business as Usual LATER” presented by Kelly McDonald, founder of McDonald Marketing; “Let it Go and Lead On!” by Vicki Floyd Clark, &EROMRK SR Women Conference Rise Up!
