Renninger (317) 695-7939 mrenninger@renningerllc.com . www.renningerllc.com IN MEMORY OF Donald William Tanselle, 96, past chairman of the executive committee of Merchants National Corporation, Indianapolis, died May 2. He joined Merchants National Bank & Trust Company as a management trainee in 1948 and later rose through positions including vice president in charge of the bank’s branch banking system, senior vice president of branch administration and operations, executive vice president and cashier, president of the holding company, vice chairman of the bank and, in 1986, vice chairman of the holding company. Upon retiring in 1987 he continued to serve as chairman of the executive committee of Merchants National Corporation and acted as a consultant to the bank and holding company, as well as a senior consultant to Sease, Gerig & Associates. In 1978, Tanselle played a key role in preliminary secret meetings that culminated in the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt under President Jimmy Carter. In 1980, Indianapolis Mayor Bill Hudnut asked him to co-chair the Tanselle-Adams Commission regarding the use of force in police actions. He was an integral part of the passage of Senate Bill No. 1 in 1985, which allowed Indiana banks to expand beyond the boundaries of their headquartered counties. Tanselle was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by four Indiana governors. Other civic responsibilities included leadership service with the Indiana State Fair Commission, Indianapolis Economic Development Corp., Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association, Commission for Downtown, The Hundred Club of Indianapolis and the United Way of Central Indiana. Additionally, he was a trustee for the University of Indianapolis, YMCA Foundation of Greater Indianapolis and Christian Theological Seminary. A member of the Indiana Bankers Association 40 Year Club, Tanselle completed the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin and was granted an honorary doctorate from the University of Indianapolis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Africa and the Middle East from 1943 to 1946. HB
