FROM THE BOARD ROOM Sue Ellspermann, president of Ivy Tech Community College, has joined the corporate board of directors of German American Bancorp Inc., Jasper. She previously served as Indiana’s 50th lieutenant governor and as an Indiana state representative. Earlier in her career, Ellspermann was a founding director of the University of Southern Indiana’s Center for Applied Research and Economic Development, an owner of Ellspermann and Associates Inc., and she held industrial engineering positions at GM, Michelin and Frito-Lay. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Louisville. Alan M. Applegate has been elected chairman of the board of The New Washington State Bank, Charlestown, and of New Independent Bancshares Inc. He joined the bank board in 2017. Applegate is the founding member of Applegate Fifer Pulliam LLC and has more than 30 years of experience as an attorney representing lenders, buyers and sellers. He serves as a director for New Hope Services Inc. and is a charter member of the Jeffersonville Kiwanis Club. Applegate earned bachelor’s and JD degrees from the University of Florida. Betty Carver has retired as chairman of the board of The New Washington State Bank, Charlestown, and of New Independent Bancshares Inc. after 14 years of service. She remains an active board member of both the bank and holding company. Carver led the bank through the challenges of the recession of 2008, area tornadoes in 2012 and the COVID-19 pandemic.
