62 SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2021 career years in banking, and I love the role of a community banker. It’s a profession that has introduced me to thousands of great people.” 6. What is a personal motto or quote that you live by? “My personal motto doesn’t exist, but I have always loved the movie The Shawshank Redemption. ‘Get busy living or get busy dying’ has become a staple of my everyday life, and I think it reminds me to focus on what I enjoy and move past the stuff I don’t.” 7. Reflecting on your career, what accomplishments are you most proud of? “I am most proud of the success that the Lake City Bank team has created together. Community banking is built upon a foundation of teamwork and commitment to culture. Culture has been challenged during the COVID pandemic for all of us, and while we’ve all had some tough times during the last 18 months, our culture has carried us through them.” 8. Please share a bit about family/home life. “Our two daughters, Audrey (29) and Blair (25), have both matured into wonderful young adults. They are strong proponents for themselves and their beliefs, and have made Susan and me immensely proud. And Susan truly gets much of the credit for their development.” HB IBA Board Review David M. Findlay At-Large Director Indiana Bankers Association President and CEO Lake City Bank, Warsaw HB Digital: Click to view a biography of David Findlay, or visit Indiana.bank/about. Hoosier Banker posed eight questions to David Findlay, at-large member of the Indiana Bankers Association Board of Directors. His responses: 1. What was your first job, and what did you learn from it? “My first paying job was as a paperboy, but my first real job was working at Elkhart Bicycle Shop from eighth to 12th grade. While I was a pretty good bike mechanic, the most important thing I learned from owner Frank Cassella was the art of selling. “I loved the challenge of selling a Fuji bike over a competitive Schwinn! I sold a record 13 bikes in one day in 1979 and am still proud of that today!” 2. Who has inspired you, and how? “My father is a retired dentist, and I was destined to be a dentist when I entered DePauw University in 1980. It was a pretty simple choice as he inspired me with his love of his profession, his relationships with his patients and his engagement with his community. “Thankfully, I got a D in biology and ended up being a banker. I have gotten the same benefits with my profession, and I don’t have to stick my hands in people’s mouths!” 3. What drew you to banking? “Tom Cath was the director of Career Planning and Placement at DePauw, and he had left a banking career to join the university. Tom’s experience as a banker motivated me to learn more about the banking world, and I continued a series of internships with Indiana National Bank and other financial firms that sealed the deal for me from there.” 4. What advice do you have for those starting careers in banking? “Bring an intense curiosity to work with you every day. Try to learn about every area of the bank, not just the one you are starting in. Build relationships throughout the bank, and value the role of every single person who works at the bank. Finally, identify mentors and actively engage with them to learn.” 5. If you weren’t a banker, what would you be? “Great question, but thankfully it is one that I don’t have to think about! I have spent nearly 31 of my 37 Susan and David Findlay are proud parents of Blair (front left) and Audrey (front right).
