Dan Maddox, a member of the IBA Board of Directors, is chairman and CEO of Citizens State Bank, New Castle. His banking career follows a family legacy of four generations of bankers. What was your first job, and what did you learn from it? “Dairy Queen. I learned that you should always be kind to those who are making your food!” Who has inspired you, and how? “My mom and grandma have been great role models in how to treat others with kindness and compassion. They each in their own way always seem to brighten the lives of others by taking the time to be present and showing a genuine interest in their well-being. It has served as a great reminder that the little things we do can have an outsized impact on the lives of others.” What drew you to banking? “I was fortunate to learn the business from my dad, and from an early age was intrigued by our family business. Hearing and seeing so many examples of how we can create a positive impact with our clients and communities was what ultimately got me hooked.” What advice do you have for those starting careers in banking? “Don’t worry as much about what your first role is, but look for a company whose values align with yours and whose leaders inspire you. If you have intellectual curiosity, a strong work ethic and a desire to be a good team member, there will be a plethora of opportunities for career advancement in most community banks.” What do you do for fun when not working? “My family and I like to be outside and enjoy traveling to new places. You can find us skiing, hiking, biking, playing tennis and enjoying time on the water. I also play guitar in a rock ’n’ roll band and enjoying cooking for friends and family.” What’s one item on your bucket list? “I would like to visit Europe with my family.” Kelsey and Dan Maddox are proud parents to Janie (lower left) and Hadley. What is a personal motto or quote that you live by? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Reflecting on your career, what accomplishments are you most proud of? “I’m proud of how nimble we’ve been managing through the pandemic and in particular how well we delivered on the Paycheck Protection Program. The entire experience has reinforced how integral community banking is and may prove to be one of the single best examples of us delivering on our mission of helping our clients, coworkers and communities succeed. “I’m also very proud to serve as the fourth generation leader of our family business and to be positioning our company for future generations.” Please share a bit about family/home life. “My wife Kelsey is a first grade teacher, and we have two daughters, Hadley (10) and Janie (8). It is a busy phase of life, and we try to enjoy every minute of it. “We live in Pendleton and love it here! It’s a quintessential small town that is close to everything.” HB
