Hoosier Banker Josh Myers Vice President - Member Engagement Indiana Bankers Association jmyers@indiana.bank The IBA Future Leadership Division hosted its annual Leadership Conference in Indianapolis on August 18-19 at the Hyatt Place Indianapolis Downtown. The Leadership Conference is a signature event for the FLD that aims to connect emerging leaders for peer network growth, educate attendees on leadership and professional development skills, and facilitate conversation to engage critical thinking and thought sharing. This year the Leadership Conference was attended by more than 90 members. Jon-Myckle Price of Security Federal Savings Bank in Logansport welcomed attendees to the event in his capacity as 2022 FLD Advisory Board president. The opening keynote speaker was the ever-popular Lindsay Boccardo who encouraged attendees to remind themselves about their great human capacity to handle stress, face fears and ultimately transform who we are so we can rise above the challenges for our teams, our families and ourselves. Following the presentation, a networking lunch was enjoyed by all. Next on the agenda was a session of speed roundtable discussion topics where attendees were introduced to new peers while sharing conversation on topics including self-improvement and the future of banking. The conference’s next speaker was Dora Lutz, who compelled attendees to consider how a culture of corporate civic engagement can connect values, purpose and mission within a bank, and support business strategy. The FLD Leadership Conference then was visited by Erin Houchin, former Indiana state senator and current candidate for Congress representing Indiana’s 9th District. Introduced by IBA Chief Policy Officer Dax Denton, who also gave a brief IBA Government Relations overview, Houchin shared with attendees her path to running for Congress, the importance of grassroots advocacy during her time in public service and her thoughts on the future of our state and country. The day concluded with attendees sharing in an enjoyable scavenger hunt around downtown Indianapolis followed by a tasty dinner at Nada. Day two of the Leadership Conference included a buffet breakfast before the first speaker of the day, CJ McClanahan. With talent attraction and retention being such a relevant issue felt by all, McClanahan’s presentation offered attendees a proven strategy to help build a roadmap to recruit – and keep – the best talent. Next, Matthew R. Fix of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis provided an informative session on the Federal Home Loan Bank system in addition to insight on characteristics of effective community bank leaders today and the characteristics that future leaders will need to possess. Another speed roundtable discussion session allowed attendees to meet new peers, this time discussing the topic of employee attraction and retention. The final speaker for the conference was Shari Storms, who shared how personalizing communications allows people to be more responsive and offered techniques for building an environment that is drama-free, where employees feel valued and empowered. While the conference has concluded, the lessons learned, new friends made and knowledge gained will benefit all those who attended, while also benefiting the banks that allowed them to attend. Thank you to all the banks who committed to engaging their employees in this year’s FLD Leadership Conference. Thank you as well to the sponsors of the conference who made the event a success, including Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, Independent Community Bankers of America, infotex, SmithAmundsen LLC (now called Amundsen Davis LLC) and our event sponsor Krieg DeVault LLP.
