Goggins, new member of the Indiana Bankers Association Board of Directors. He joins the board by merit of his new position as president of the IBA Future Leadership Division Advisory Board. Goggins is senior vice president, retail banking of German American Bank, Jasper. What was your first job, and what did you learn from it? My first real job was at a McDonald’s when I turned 14. I learned a lot about customer service, patience and up-selling. However, what I learned the most is how to create a fun environment at work. While some of my coworkers would come in with a negative attitude, I found that smiles, caring for others and having fun were all contagious. When you put positivity and happiness out into the world, it generally comes back to you. Who has inspired you, and how? My parents. I grew up in a great family where I saw my parents balancing work and life. Neither of them went to college or started with any type of financial nest egg. We didn’t have much extra money to spare, yet we always seemed to have enough because of them working multiple jobs. Plus, they still found time to focus on the family. What advice do you have for those starting careers in banking? Banking is a relationship-based industry. You may be tempted to spend your time focusing on your own goals and needs, yet also prioritize the importance of building strong relationships inside and outside of the bank. If you weren’t a banker, what would you be? A school counselor and high school football coach. What’s one item on your bucket list? Being on the Amazing Race with my oldest daughter as my partner. We’ve already been practicing even IBA Board Review Brock C. Goggins Future Leadership Division President Indiana Bankers Association SVP, Retail Banking German American Bank, Jasper though she is only 9 years old! If we start training now, we’ll be guaranteed to win, right?! Her 7th birthday party was in the middle of a COVID-peak season, so we made our own Amazing Race using several locations around our hometown. It was a lot of work to prepare and a wonderful memory! What is a personal motto or quote that you live by? “Remember to be the light!” I remind both my girls about this every morning before school. There is a lot of darkness in this world, but we don’t need to be sad about it. We are called to be a light in the darkness. Reflecting on your career, what accomplishments are you most proud of? I have always been blessed to have great teams and colleagues, so what I am most proud of is helping others achieve their career goals. It’s really rewarding to be a part of their journey. Please share a bit about family/home life. My wife and I have been married for 13 years. We met in college, and we have been and always will be best friends. We have two daughters, ages 6 and 9. When I’m not at work, you’ll find me spending time with them. We like hiking, sports and watching movies as a family.
