Howrey Second Vice Chairman Indiana Bankers Association President & CEO North Salem State Bank Get to know Matthew W. Howrey, second vice chairman of the Indiana Bankers Association Board of Directors. Howrey is president and CEO of North Salem State Bank. What was your first job, and what did you learn from it? My first “real” job was with the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. I couldn’t have been more blessed to work with such a great group of people at the DFI. We were constantly learning, training and networking with bankers and fellow examiners from around the country, which really positioned me well for a career in banking. What drew you to banking? Banking was not my first career choice. I was lucky enough to start my career at the DFI where I developed a love for community banking. After nearly seven years of traveling the country for the DFI, I knew I wanted to be a community banker someday so I could be part of the community like so many great bankers I met along the way. What advice do you have for those starting careers in banking? Like I’ve told so many people along the way, community banking is the greatest career I could ever imagine. We go to work every day knowing that our decisions are helping our communities become a better place to live. The community service opportunities are limitless. The more you put into your career, the more you’ll be blessed. What do you do for fun when not working? The older of my two boys is now in high school, so we don’t have near the free time we used to. When we do have a day off from sports and school, we like to spend our time on the water somewhere or in the woods just relaxing and enjoying nature with friends and family. What’s one item on your bucket list? As the boys and I continue to cross off our bucket list items, the next big adventure would be red stag hunting in New Zealand. Hopefully someday! What is a personal motto or quote that you live by? Teddy Roosevelt’s, “Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” Reflecting on your career, what accomplishments are you most proud of? I’m so proud of the team we’ve put together at NSSB who continue to live our motto, “Where Caring Still Counts.” With a great group of customers, directors and employees, we’ve successfully grown the bank in my 15 years from $128 million to nearly $600 million, and we’ve done it the right way by supporting our communities and taking care of our customers! Please share a bit about family/home life. I’m blessed with two wonderful boys, Delton & Trevor, who keep me busy every day, and I love every minute of it. We live in the small town of Coatesville in Hendricks County, which is just close enough we can get to town if we need to, but far enough away to have our own little slice of heaven in the country.
