Perkins, 88, former president of Farmers State Bank, LaGrange, passed away July 9. He started working at the bank – which his family helped found in 1915 – in 1954. He left in 1956 to work at Fort Wayne National Bank for four years before returning to Farmers State Bank. He became president in 1976 when his father, Floyd A. Perkins, retired. Perkins remained president until retiring from daily work in 2000. He stayed on as chairman of the board until 2010. Perkins married his wife, Judith C. Merritt, in 1967 after a short courtship that started with a blind date. He was a lifelong member at Stroh Church of Christ, where he also served as a deacon. He was a member of the Stroh Lions Club and was honored as a W.P. Woods Fellow for 60 years of service in June 2019. Perkins was an original shareholder of the Prairie Heights Community School Corporation, founded in 1963; and served as a founding board member and first president of the LaGrange County Community Foundation in 1991, continuing to serve on the board until 1997. After his retirement, Perkins worked with the LCCF to establish the Stroh Community Fund in 2000 and the Prairie Heights Perkins Family Scholarship Fund in 2009. Perkins is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren and two sisters. His brother, James “Jim,” passed away the same day as Miles. They had two additional sisters who preceded them in death. James W. “Jim” Perkins, 86, former board member at Farmers State Bank, LaGrange, passed away July 9. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years before marrying his first wife, Patricia J. Hoyer. They were married until her death in 1999. Perkins married Linda Klink Buss in 2003. He was a farmer after leaving the Navy. His sons joined him in 1982, at which point they renamed the farming operation Perkins Twin Creek Farms. Perkins also owned Stroh Farm Supply. He was a member of the Stroh Lions Club for more than 50 years, served on the Prairie Heights School Board, was a LaGrange County Councilman, served on the board for the ARC of LaGrange County and was a longtime board member at the bank, which his family helped found in 1915. He is survived by his wife, five children, 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four stepchildren, three step-grandchildren and two sisters. His brother, Miles, passed away the same day as Jim. They had two additional sisters who preceded them in death. HB
