SIGNIFICANT STEPS FOR KENTUCKY JASON WILSON, KADA PRESIDENT Dear KADA Members, The past year has proven, once again, the perseverance and resiliency of car dealers and the automotive industry. As the effects of the pandemic have slowly begun to wear off, we are still faced with the demands of an ever-changing market and the fear of an oncoming recession. Despite these challenges, automotive sales continue to grow and are expected to rise throughout 2023. From an association perspective, we have also grown in both dealer membership and in allied partnerships. With new demands in the market, such as the surge in electric vehicles, we are experiencing ongoing threats to our franchise system. As your association, it is our job to protect your interests and your business, which is why this Legislative Session was particularly important. We focused on House Bill 150 and Senate Bill 163, both of which were met with success. SB 163 prohibits manufacturer direct sales and requires retail reservations to be assigned to dealers. It also expressly provides that military members are not required to have a Kentucky driver’s license to register a vehicle in Kentucky. HB 150 ensures that franchise dealer rights are even further protected. These important pieces of legislation will benefit our industry for hopefully years to come. Looking ahead, we are anxiously awaiting the introduction of electronic titling and registration, which should be available at the beginning of next year. This is a significant step forward for our industry in the state of Kentucky, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this important improvement. Your Kentucky Auto Dealers Association is here to support your business in a multitude of ways. Aside from advocating on your behalf, we are here to provide you with educational opportunities, the best in automotive products and services offered by our partner programs, networking events, the latest news, and more. TEAMWORK IS THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS JOE CUMMINS, KADA CHAIRMAN, DON FRANKLIN AUTO GROUP Dear KADA Members, Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your 2023 Chairman — it is truly an honor. As we embark on another year, I am enthusiastic about the opportunities and obstacles that we will face as an industry. Just like in the dealership, teamwork is crucial to our success. The KADA team and Board of Directors are working hard on your behalf, and I am confident we will be sharing many achievements over the course of the year. The automotive industry is continuously changing, and we as dealers are faced with many challenges. However, KADA works hard to build relationships with legislators that support the automotive industry and our business. Your association and its Board understand the importance of advocating for Kentucky dealers, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our voices are heard. We are excited about the recent successes we had with Senate Bill 163 and House Bill 150. Between these two bills, we were able to ensure that manufacturer direct sales are prohibited, retail reservations must be assigned to dealers, military members do not need a Kentucky driver’s license to register a vehicle in the state, and much more. Thank you to everyone who reached out to legislators. One of the most important ways we can support our industry is by contributing to the KADET fund. This fund helps to elect pro-dealer and pro-business legislators who will fight for our interests. With your support, we can continue to achieve legislative successes like we have this year and in the past. I also encourage all members to take advantage of our KADA partner programs, which offer exclusive discounts and benefits to our members. And don’t forget to mark your calendars for our upcoming KADA Convention, taking place June 19–22, 2023. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with other industry professionals, learn about the latest trends and best practices, and have some fun! NADA DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE DAN RENSHAW, PRESIDENT AND CEO, RENSHAW AUTOMOTIVE GROUP Dear Kentucky dealers, I want to wish everyone a great 2023. Despite the various challenges we’ve all experienced over the past couple of years, dealers are experiencing positive profits and sales are growing. May we keep thriving in 2023 and beyond. As we continue to face challenges and changes in the industry, please remember to work closely with our state legislators. This ensures the laws and policies that are created will protect our franchise rights and our businesses. Maintaining good relationships with the legislators who represent us in each of our districts will pay dividends in the future. Our NADA will continue to do everything in their power to help us as we drive forward into the future. Their lobbying and policy efforts extend beyond the halls of Congress and into the various departments, such as the Treasury, to ensure that our interests are always considered in every piece of legislation or policy that affects us. We must all remain close to these two great resources — NADA and KADA. When we work together as a team and leverage the strengths of our associations, we become a much more powerful dealer body. We should feel confident that our NADA and KADA will always have the betterment of our dealer body at the forefront of all they do. We certainly have great leadership in both of our associations with Mike Stanton at the helm of NADA and Jason Wilson at the helm of our KADA. There will be many changes over the next decade with new trends in the market, shifting consumer demands, varying economic factors and so on. The more we stay involved with our OEMs, our employees, our state legislators, and our U.S. Congressmen, the better and more informed we will be to march forward into the future, helping mold the industry we serve. As most of you know, we have a great team of approximately 190 employees at NADA in Washington who are constantly involved in many projects that you read about in Automotive News and on the NADA reports daily. Our NADA Show in Dallas this year was a blast, and I had the privilege of being the show’s Chairman. I’m already looking forward to next year’s show on February 1–4, 2024, in Las Vegas. A BRAVE, NEW WORLD AHEAD MIKE STANTON, NADA PRESIDENT AND CEO The National Automobile Dealers Association is leading the auto industry into a brave, new world. In the past few years, we’ve seen the retail automotive landscape change at a rapid pace. We’re seeing changes in the cars themselves and the way people purchase them. But with change comes a wave of new opportunities for dealers across the nation! We need the help of state dealer associations, like the Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association, to be as engaged and proactive as ever to meet the challenges of the year. NADA has led dealers through a complex time in our industry. Last year, we worked to overcome a host of issues: microchip shortages, disruptions along the vehicle supply chain, low inventory on our dealership lots, and overly broad federal regulations that could negatively impact our businesses, employees, and customers. Moreover, our franchise system is currently being challenged from all directions — calls for agency relationships, expanded over-the-air updates, direct sales, new data sharing regulations, and more. To meet these new and evolving challenges, NADA launched its “Guiding Principles,” which capture the realities of our business: • The Evolving Business Model • The Franchise System • Downstream Revenue • Allocation-Reservations • Data • Operational Efficiencies Scan the QR code to read more about the “Guiding Principles.” https://www.nada.org/nada/issues/future-retail These six particular aspects highlight our core values and the common ground between dealers and legacy OEMs. I encourage you to review these principles and keep them in mind this year. NADA will continue to reinforce how auto dealers are ALL IN on EVs, and that we are essential for an electric future. Make no mistake, this evolution is being driven not only by consumer demand but also by government emission and fuel economy regulations. And we are doing our part to sell and service these exciting vehicles. Rest assured NADA will continue to advocate on behalf of all dealers in our Nation’s Capital as well as work with our OEMs to build bridges so we can provide our customers with a great buying experience. Dealers and their OEMs essentially want the same things; we just don’t always agree on how to do it. The NADA team will make a concerted effort to demonstrate that the new-car franchise system is the best way to sell and service vehicles and that dealers are the competitive advantage for the legacy OEMs over the direct sellers. I wish KADA and all its dealers a successful 2023 in this brave, new world ahead! Huffman was chosen to represent the Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association in the national competition – one of only 48 auto dealers nominated for the 54th annual award from more than 16,000 nationwide. “Like many family-owned dealerships, we consider our employees to be part of our family,” nominee Huffman said. “We believe in extensive training, consistent recognition and allowing individuals to flourish, which has resulted in long-term, sometimes multi-decade relationships with team members.” A 1980 graduate of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where she earned a B.A. in communication, Huffman has spent her career at Neil Huffman Automotive Group, the company originally founded in 1969 by her father, Neil, with a single Volkswagen store in Louisville, Kentucky. “As a second-generation dealer, I began in office management, titling and financials, then moved into communication, public relations and advertising for our first five franchises,” she said. “After the untimely passing of my father, I was well positioned to become the dealer principal at Neil Huffman Nissan in Louisville in 2007.” In 2008, Huffman attended the NADA Academy to further her education and give her the tools she needed to run a successful dealership. “I was one of a few female dealer principals in the entire state of Kentucky,” she said. “I took a subpar franchise and improved each department to obtain top-level awards and profits. This success led to a profitable sale of the dealership.” Today, she and her nephew, Shane Huffman, are managing partners, overseeing the Neil Huffman Automotive Group, which encompasses 10 dealership locations in Frankfort, Louisville and Clarksville, Indiana, representing brands Acura, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru and Volkswagen. Her late brother, Dow Huffman, who passed away in 2020, played an integral role in the growth of the company. “While my father was a successful dealer with great standards and profitability, I used his leadership platform and made it stronger,” Huffman said. “With the input of each department manager, we implemented more streamlined and efficient methods, compelled tech evolution, developed training, boosted morale and brought in change consultants who helped turn the company into a streamlined growth driver.” Huffman brings that same can-do spirit to the Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association, where she has served on the Board of Directors since 2011 and was Chair in 2021, Vice Chair in 2020 and Treasurer in 2019. “As the state's first-ever Chairwoman, I worked with county clerks and state leaders to advance the use of new titling technology, as well as advocated with legislators to update tax laws similar to adjoining states and protect franchise laws,” she said. Huffman also held leadership positions for the Greater Louisville Automobile Dealers Association, where she created multiple workshops for area dealers and their employees and built momentum and attendance for the Louisville Auto Show.
