President’s Message SIGNIFICANT STEPS FORWARD FOR OUR INDUSTRY JASON WILSON, PRESIDENT, KADA Dear KADA Members, Despite various challenges and changes in market demand, the automotive industry continues on a path of steady growth. As inventory levels and incentives rise, car dealers are slowly working their way back to pre-pandemic norms. From an association perspective, we have been growing in both dealer membership and vendor partnerships. All of this growth has come in the face of several threats to our business and to the franchise model. From the FTC’s Safeguards Rule to electric vehicle requirements to direct sales attempts, there has been no shortage of obstacles thrown in our path over the past year. As your association, it is our job to protect your business and your interests. Which is why, alongside fellow associations as well as NADA, we have been busy monitoring these threats, sending letters to those in power and ensuring that you all, our dealer body, are informed and prepared for any new developments. Additionally, we were very active and successful in this year’s Legislative Session. We focused on House Bill 167, 375 and 833. HB 167 resolves discrepancies with prior owner disclosure information, while HB 375 makes registration for out-of-state co-buyers easier. HB 833 enables qualifying dealerships to conduct their own inspections on out-of-state vehicles and helps deter fraud. Looking ahead, we are extremely excited about the implementation of electronic titling and registration across the state — finally! This is a significant step forward for our industry in the state of Kentucky, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this important improvement. Your Kentucky Auto Dealers Association is here to support your business in a multitude of ways. Chairman’s Message SUPPORTING OUR INDUSTRY DAVID MOORE, 2024 CHAIRMAN, KADA Dear KADA Members, Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your 2024 KADA Chairman — I couldn’t be more honored. Each year presents new changes and obstacles to face in our industry, but it couldn’t be a better time to be a part of KADA. The KADA team and Board of Directors are working hard on your behalf, listening to your concerns and pushing to improve the future for all Kentucky dealers. The automotive industry is continuously changing, and recently we have seen a number of issues that prove to challenge how we do business. However, through the relationships that KADA has built with legislators who support our business, we have accomplished various legislative and regulatory feats. In this year’s General Session, we saw solutions to discrepancies with prior owner disclosure information and registration for out-of-state co-buyers. Additionally, we were able to establish that qualifying dealerships may conduct their own inspections on out-of-state vehicles. Not to mention that our previous legislative success with the Clerk’s Modernization Bill is now officially taking effect, as dealerships across the state are being introduced to electronic titling and registration! Thank you to everyone who reached out to their legislators this session and in sessions past. Your participation matters. And one of the biggest ways we can support our industry is by contributing to the KADET fund. This fund helps ensure that legislators who understand all that we contribute to the Commonwealth of Kentucky are elected to office. NADA Director’s Message PROMISE AND OPPORTUNITY DAN RENSHAW, DIRECTOR, NADA Dear Kentucky dealers, I hope that 2024 has proven to be prosperous so far. As our industry continues to evolve, I believe that each year is filled with even more promise and opportunity. Reflecting on the challenges we have faced over the past years and presently, it’s remarkable to see the resilience and adaptability displayed by dealers across the state. Our business continues to show remarkable growth and profitability. In navigating the twists and turns of our industry, it’s essential that we maintain close ties with our state legislators. By fostering strong relationships with those who shape policy, we can ensure that the laws enacted safeguard our franchise rights and strengthen our businesses. The unwavering support of your state and national associations — KADA and NADA — remains instrumental as we chart our course ahead. When we come together to leverage our collective strength, we create an even more powerful voice. This voice carries significant weight in shaping the regulatory environment. And rest assured that both NADA and KADA are working hard on behalf of the dealer body — under the pronounced leadership of Mike Stanton at NADA and Jason Wilson at KADA. As we look ahead to the future, we anticipate rapid change and innovation. From shifting consumer preferences to emerging market trends, staying up to date on these developments is essential for staying ahead of the curve. The greater presence we have with our OEMs, employees and legislators, the more successful we will be at navigating the road ahead. This year’s NADA Show in Las Vegas was a resounding success, a testament to the strength of our industry and the camaraderie within it. As we eagerly anticipate next year’s show in New Orleans, Jan. 23-26, 2025, let’s seize the opportunity to connect, learn and grow together. NADA Chairman’s Message STAY INVOLVED, STAY EDUCATED AND STAY IN TOUCH GARY GILCHRIST, 2024 CHAIRMAN, NADA Fellow dealers, During the course of 2024, while serving as NADA vice chairman, I was very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to visit many states and engage in discussions with many dealers and dealer representatives about both the national and individual state-level issues they were facing. There is no shortage of obstacles to overcome and winding rivers to navigate, but I am energized, informed and ready to tackle everything that’s before us head-on. My priorities as the 2024 NADA chairman are straightforward: 1. Continue to work with the NADA professional staff, dealers and OEMs to protect and support the franchise system. 2. Enhance dealer engagement and involvement. 3. Further strengthen the working relationship between NADA and ATAE. 4. Defend the auto retail industry against regulatory overreach. Why are these my priorities? Because dealers, NADA, ATAEs and the manufacturers are the legs of the stool upon which the entire franchise sits. And the legs of this stool must be strong and balanced to support the considerable weight the franchise system must endure, especially today. Challenges are coming at us from all different directions. In my 47 years in this business, I cannot think of a time when dealers have been pulled in so many directions and challenged on so many fronts. I want you to know our NADA staff and dealers have been continually working on each of these priorities, and many more issues simultaneously. I look at my job as doing what I can to remind everyone that we will accomplish so much more by working with one another than not. We’ve got a lot on our plate. Which means YOU have a lot on your plate! So, stay involved, stay educated and stay in touch with your directors and your ATAEs. 2024 TIME DEALER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE NANCY SPARKS Nancy Sparks was one of a select group of 49 dealer nominees from across the country who was honored at the 107th annual National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Feb. 3, 2024. The TIME Dealer of the Year award is one of the automobile industry’s most prestigious and highly coveted honors. The award recognizes the nation’s most successful auto dealers who also demonstrate a longstanding commitment to community service. Sparks was chosen to represent the Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association in the national competition — one of only 49 auto dealers nominated for the 55th annual award from more than 16,000 nationwide. “The greatest impact of my retail automotive career has been making a difference in the daily lives of my employees,” nominee Sparks said. “Getting to know them as family, giving them the financial security to raise their children and to enjoy life and helping them grow in their careers has been very rewarding.” 28 2024 KADA MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
Sparks, who studied early childhood education at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio, was a stay-athome mom and community volunteer when her husband, Patrick DeCastro, the founder of Kerry Automotive, died suddenly. “My automotive career began on Christmas Eve in 2013, the day Pat passed away of complications following a surgical procedure,” she said. “I was completely overwhelmed at the prospect of running 10 stores with 450 employees but decided that I owed it to our loyal, hardworking and dedicated associates to do my best to keep the company viable and moving forward.” Sparks went to work attending meetings, getting to know every employee, understanding each job function and learning the auto industry from the ground up. She listened to feedback, identified the company’s strengths and weaknesses and came up with ways to overcome obstacles. “I faced many challenges but surrounded myself with smart, loyal and honest advisors from within the team who helped me navigate this new world,” she said. “I was determined to keep my late husband’s legacy alive, our employees’ jobs secure and adapt to the ever-changing car business.” Today, Sparks continues to oversee Kerry Automotive’s 10 stores in Kentucky and Ohio, representing Buick, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen. Her current husband, daughter, son and nephew are all part of her team at the dealership group. “In the past 10 years, every store has exceeded all expectations,” she said. “We have solidified our relationships with manufacturers and have established ourselves as a force to be reckoned with in the retail automotive industry.” Sparks is a champion of the Kentucky Automobile Dealers Association, where she is currently on the executive committee and has served as board chair. “The association provided me with invaluable insights from fellow dealers who share similar goals,” she said. “I have also had the privilege of representing Kentucky auto dealers in Washington, D.C., lobbying lawmakers on issues that affect our industry and business.” The bulk of her philanthropic giving and volunteer activities focus on helping critically ill children, a cause very close to her heart. “In March of 2016, my 15-month-old niece had an emergency heart transplant,” Sparks said. “I was inspired by the wonderful care she received and now try to make a difference for other children.” To that end, she supports Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the American Red Cross. “For Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, my contribution to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit has provided funding to enhance the level of care,” she said. “In addition, I have endowed money for the hospital’s Heart and Mind Wellbeing Center, the first program of its kind in the nation.” The Cincinnati Ronald McDonald House is the largest in its network and provides housing for families whose children are undergoing treatment at an area hospital. Sparks supports the group’s Taste of Hope initiative, which supplies meals to families staying in their facility so parents can completely focus on their child’s care. “I provide one-third of the annual budget for the group’s Taste of Hope kitchen,” she said. “Our employees also volunteer there one night each month, helping to prepare over 250 meals for sick children and their families.” Sparks added, “In the past seven years, I have donated approximately $3 million to many charities and institutions that benefit the most vulnerable people in our society.” Dealers are nominated by the executives of state and metro dealer associations around the country. A panel of faculty members from the Tauber Institute for Global Operations at the University of Michigan selected one finalist from each of the four NADA regions and one national Dealer of the Year. Three finalists received $5,000 for their favorite charities and the winner received $10,000 to give to charity, donated by Ally. WWW.KYADA.COM 29
