CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE A MAN OF COMMITMENT AND INTEGRITY … By Eric Nielsen, Chairman, NJ CAR Jim — I honestly don’t know where to start. I have been a dealer for more years than I can remember and have worked with you for more than 30 (27 of those with you at the helm of NJ CAR). As I wrap up the last few weeks of my third Chairmanship, I can say that knowing I would be working with you made it easy to say “Yes” when I was unexpectedly asked to step in for a second and third time as Chairman. I, and the rest of New Jersey’s franchised car and truck dealerships, could never properly express our appreciation for your commitment to our industry, first as our lobbyist and as NJ CAR President for the past 27 years. You have helped steer our dealerships through many years filled with legal, regulatory, and OEM challenges. We may not have won every fight, but it was never for lack of effort on behalf of you and the incredible staff you’ve led so well for more than a quarter century. You are one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, but your intelligence is complemented by your empathy for the many challenges dealers face on a day-to-day basis and your strength of conviction in fighting FOR what is best for New Jersey’s dealers and AGAINST anything that would harm our industry. You have represented our industry with integrity and have elevated our voice in Trenton, helping us develop productive relationships with elected officials on both sides of the aisle. That is no easy feat and I’m not sure how many others could have forged that path as well as you have. I haven’t even mentioned all that you’ve done for the NJ CAR organization itself. You have been steadfast in ensuring NJ CAR’s mission guides every decision. Whether it was lobbying on our behalf in Trenton; keeping dealers informed about legal, regulatory, compliance, and other issues that impact them; or finding products and services that help streamline our dealership operations — you’ve hit it straight down the fairway at every turn. You have assembled and developed an incredible staff that is ready, willing, and able to carry the torch you lit so many years ago. NJ CAR will certainly be different without you as its face — but as you’ve said many times over the past year — change can be good. Your successor, Laura Perrotta, will have big shoes to fill. Laura has been President of the American Truck Dealers (ATD) association for more than two years and has worked in the association world for more than 20 years. She brings her own experiences and perspective on issues critical to dealers, and she’ll have the benefit of your counsel, as needed. I’m confident I can speak on behalf of the 520 franchised dealerships throughout the State, as well as the hundreds that have come and gone over the past three decades, when I tell you that you will be missed. “Thank you” doesn’t seem to be enough, but I want to thank you for your commitment to the franchised automotive retail industry. NADA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE JIM APPLETON’S LONG, VITAL SERVICE TO ALL DEALERS WILL BE FELT FOR YEARS By Mike Stanton, President & CEO, NADA In a team of dealer advocates, Jim Appleton has always stood out. Not just for his record, his command of the issues, or even his presence — which is big and bold. In my mind, Jim has always stood out for his foresight and his straight talk. One of the things I most like about Jim has been his unyielding directness. That is an admirable trait. I have witnessed first-hand how well it has served the dealers of New Jersey, dealers across the country, and NADA. We have always known exactly where Jim stands, and we have always known where Jim thinks we should stand as an industry. Two examples come to mind to illustrate these traits. About 10 years ago, at the peak of the first wave of incoming Teslas and the sudden universe of direct-sales advocates — Jim was one of the first to see clearly that one of our biggest assets in fighting the direct-sales fervor was hiding in plain sight: the traditional OEMs themselves. Jim knew instinctively what value franchised dealers added to all automakers. And he flagged how important it was to get those automakers to say so publicly. Certainly, that has been no easy task for any of us, but Jim was 100% right to start us on that path. Not too long after, Jim clearly saw how the regulatory landscape was going to incentivize automakers to make big, permanent investments in EVs — and how dealers were going to have to go along for the ride. Jim saw the importance of demonstrating that dealers were essential to anyone’s goal of selling more electric vehicles. His vision was instrumental in New Jersey and in helping NADA to start asserting our EV messaging. Jim Appleton is one of a kind, and he will be missed. But the work Jim has done will serve New Jersey and America’s franchised dealers for a very, very long time. For that, we are extremely fortunate. AIADA CONGRATULATES JIM APPLETON By Cody Lusk, President & CEO, AIADA American society tends to celebrate and award individual achievement. However, most great successes, in business, sports, and life, can be attributed to a team effort. Few people in the auto retail industry have understood and incorporated that outlook in their careers as deeply as Jim Appleton. When I was hired at AIADA, Jim was one of the first ATAEs to reach out to me. He was enthusiastic, supportive, and made it clear that we were on the same team, working toward similar goals for our members. A lot of people talk-the-talk when it comes to inter-organizational cooperation, but Jim walked-the-walk. In all the years we worked together, he never hesitated to offer his support or his friendship, and for that I am certainly grateful. As a mentor, Jim was a straight shooter. It didn’t take me long to realize that his unfiltered opinion was always worth listening to, or that his direct approach to challenges facing New Jersey’s dealers was worth emulating. As an ATAE, Jim was all-in for his members, and he put his whole heart into defending their interests. He didn’t care if something was easy or popular — he wanted to ensure that the automotive policies of his state made sense and worked for both dealers and consumers. That attitude translated into a long and fruitful career at NJ CAR. Jim is beloved in New Jersey for his tenacity, his kindness, and his occasionally wicked sense of humor. He was a wonderful ambassador for the state at national events, and helped transform New Jersey’s dealer community into an efficient and effective model for other states to model themselves after. Through Jim, I got to know a number of Jersey’s finest dealers, several of whom went on to serve as chairmen of AIADA. These men would always step up to serve their industry, even when the timing was inconvenient or difficult. Jim modeled for his members a sense of civic responsibility to the industry as a whole — something I am confident will continue to flourish among New Jersey’s dealers long after his retirement. Today, New Jersey’s dealers, and the broader national dealer community, are far better off for his service. It’s hard to imagine going on our regular circuit of events and conventions and not seeing him, but I know he will be in a better place — maybe running another marathon or playing golf. I wish him and his wonderful family the best as they embark on this new adventure, and I hope he knows how much we in the auto industry will miss both his guidance and his good humor in the years ahead. 19 NEW JERSEY auto retailer
