O V E R A C E N T U R Y : B U I L D I N G B E T T E R B A N K S - H E L P I N G N E W M E X I C O R E A L I Z E D R E A M S Spring • 2014 13 Applications Being Accepted for 2014 Western States School of Banking Session On-Campus Event Slated June 7 – 14, 2014 at NewMexico State University in Las Cruces The Western States School of Banking (WSSB) is now accepting applications for the 2014 annual banking school which will be held June 7 – 14 on the campus of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. The 2014 session marks the 40th year that the organization has been providing training for banking professionals throughout the southwest. The school, originally known as the “New Mexico School of Banking”, is structured around two, eight-day sessions in June of two consecutive years. During each session, students study current banking practices and learn all aspects of bank management step-by-step from profitability to human resources to technology and legal issues. While in the program students live on campus, attend classes, and work on projects with other banking professionals. Throughout the year, they complete correspondence projects that help apply what is learned to their jobs within their institutions. To be eligible, applicants must be employed in an officer or supervisory capacity in a commercial bank or thrift or in a state or federal agency which supervises commercial banks or thrifts; have at least one year of experience in banking or equivalent work, or have completed one year of university courses, or have completed a substantial number of American Institute of Banking courses. In fact, a recent survey done via the PPA called The Essential Medium, found B2B publications - such as New Mexico Bankers Digest , to be the number one information source within any given industry when compared to other media. In the survey, respondents were asked whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of attitude statements and the PPA compiled the data, resulting in the percentages. Verbatim responses were collected by the survey, which are added to exemplify the points. Here are a few excerpts: • Business publication are rated the first choice for staying in touch with what’s going on in their sector by 61% percent of decision makers. • 83% of managers would recommend to people starting a career in their sector to read the business publications. • “If I didn’t read them I wouldn’t know what’s going on.” • 71% of decision makers believe that B2B magazines are essential reading. • “I would be lost without my business publications.” • “With the information we gather from the publications, we can determine if we are on the right track or if we need to change direction.” n
