6 Reed Ryan Executive Director The Utah Asphalt Pavement Association EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE So far, 2022 has felt like a period of transition. We are grateful for each and every one of you. We hope you will use this directory to connect to your peers, engage one another, and find ways to help all of us become better. https://utahasphalt.org/ about-us/#intro CONTINUING TO GET IT DONE! Dear Valued UAPA Members, We are glad you are association members, and we are grateful for your support. UAPA would not be what it is, 11 years and counting, without the generosity, expertise, energy and commitment you provide. We hope you can see the benefits of membership, too. When people work together, the resulting synergy is wonderful to experience. So far, 2022 has felt like a period of transition. I don’t think I will ever take talking or meeting in person for granted again. We don’t know what will happen in the future, but it does seem likely that COVID will be increasingly relegated to the background. People will continue to be diagnosed, but prevention and treatments will improve. It won’t be as lifethreatening as it has been. We focused last year on making the most of personal connections, being fiscally responsible with association resources and working through our strategic plan. It is exciting to think we now have an opportunity to think through and implement a new strategic plan for the association for the remainder of 2022 and 2023. I am confident we have lessons to learn and can meet the future’s challenging circumstances. In addition to the 11th Annual Golf Classic, held in August 2022, we have three great upcoming events planned for November 2022. The Central-Eastern Utah Asphalt Summit will be November 1, 2022, at the Uintah Conference Center. We are very excited to bring this event back to Eastern Utah since the last time we met for the Summit in 2016. We will present three educational sessions, have industry leaders update attendees about what’s new on an agency level and have a mini equipment rodeo. The CentralEastern Asphalt Summit will be a great way to prepare for the next paving season. We will ensure plenty of networking time and plan to offer meals and snacks, too. The educational sessions are: • Double Chip Seals Using CIR Applications • What’s in your Asphalt Mix Today— What’s Likely to be in it Tomorrow • Effective Road Maintenance Programs The UAPA 2022 Fall Conference is scheduled for November 10, 2022, at The Dixie Convention Center. Another chance to play golf with other UAPA members will be on November 11, 2022. We put a huge amount of effort into this conference, and attendees have told us that they find it to be a worthwhile event. This year won’t be any different. From November 28, 2022-December 1, 2022, UAPA members will visit Auburn University and NCAT’s Research Center and Test Track. The research center is a leading research institution with state-of-the-art equipment to test asphalt binders and mixers, and the test track is a 1.7-mile oval divided into 200-foot test sections. We plan to tour the preservation sections on Lee Road 159, the NCAT laboratory and test track, hear technical presentations, eat, and (for those interested) experience a golf outing at the Grand National. It’s going to be informative and fun. We hope you will find this directory useful. The strength of UAPA is the strength of our members. We are grateful for each and every one of you. We hope you will use this directory to connect to your peers, engage one another, and find ways to help all of us become better. The association stands ready to help you make these kinds of connections. Keri and I are always happy to help you. Call, text, email or visit us when you have a question or an idea. Best regards, Reed

TREASURER • Casey Hawkins • Geneva Rock Products The Executive Committee consists of the current president, the immediate past president, the president-elect, a secretary, and a treasurer. This committee oversees all actions of the association. Particularly, this committee is responsible for ensuring that the actions of the association are in line with the overall goals and strategic plan for UAPA. Therefore, the Executive Committee often serves as a filter for any action needing approval that may come before the Board. UAPA’s Board of Directors consists of executives and owners from eleven members in good standing with the association. The Board draws from all levels of membership in UAPA to create a voting bloc that gives each member of the Board exactly one vote. The Board of Directors gives final approval to any official action taken by the association. This includes fiduciary as well as non-fiduciary responsibilities. Through the use of UAPA’s Industry Improvement Agenda, and the association’s strategic plan all proposed actions, works in progress, or completed projects are brought before the Board through the chairs of UAPA’s working committees along with the recommendation from the Executive Committee. Motions are made, votes taken, and necessary follow-up to UAPA’s working committees is then given at each of these meetings. The Operations Committee consists of leaders and decision-makers from member companies as assigned and approved by the association’s executive leadership. The Operations Committee monitors, reviews, and develops recommendations to the Board of Directors in respect to the core values and several key areas of industry including, but not limited to the following charters within the Committee: Operations, HMA Production, HMA Construction, Transportation, Pavement Preservation, Technical, Aggregate Production, and Local Government. 14 • 3 The UAPA Lunch & Learn Program helps members stay current about specification changes as well as information about new products and innovations. These events, among others, are also an excellent opportunity for industry networking. For each Lunch & Learn session we look for presenters who are industry experts or who are well-educated about their specific subject. Lunch & Learn sessions often generate a lot of follow-up conversations and meetings. Those who hear the presentations often take the information back to their colleagues and that prompts additional conversations and opportunities for engagement. These free sessions give you the right tools to make good decisions and help you to find the right path for the particular problem you are trying to solve. They are also a great first exposure to UAPA. Please check our Events Page for upcoming Lunch & Learn events, as well as other events held throughout the year. WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER A CAREER IN ASPHALT PAVEMENT? CAREERS IN ASPHALT PAVEMENT MONEY The industry provides high paying jobs for workers at every level. Workers on many asphalt pavement projects must be paid minimum wages that for most positions exceed $30 per hour. JOB SECURITY Asphalt pavement jobs cannot be outsourced to other countries. Roads are built and maintained by people who live and work in the local community, there are miles and miles of roads in dire need of repair, and more workers are expected to retire than can be replaced in the near future. OPPORTUNITY Formal education is not a barrier to advancement. Asphalt pavement companies care more about desire to work and learn than degrees. Hard workers can get to top-level positions with or without formal education. VARIETY There are positions for employees who place asphalt pavement, prepare bids, administer contracts, test asphalt pavement in labs, manage projects, mix asphalt pavement, operate heavy equipment and trucks, fix equipment, advertise, and perform many other tasks. WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER A CAREER IN ASPHALT PAVEMENT? Asphalt pavement is essential to the economy. Everything in your home or apartment traveled over an asphalt road at some point. Most of our roads were built prior to 1980, are nearing the end of (or are past) their expected life, and will need to rebuilt in the very near future. Asphalt pavement is the most recycled product in the United States by weight —all existing asphalt pavement can be ground up and reused in new asphalt pavement. Smooth asphalt roads significantly reduce vehicle fuel use and wear-and-tear, and provide a surface that is quieter for drivers and surrounding communities. Asphalt pavement is made of natural materials. The stone, sand, and gravel come fromquarries, and the binder (the glue that holds everything together) comes form naturally occurring deposits of the oil refining process. WHAT ARE SOME FACTS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT ASPHALT PAVEMENT?
