San Diego County New Vehicle Market Dashboard MARKET PERFORMANCE DURING PAST TWO YEARS San Diego County Quarterly Registrations Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate, Converted to Equivalent U.S. New Vehicle Market SAAR (millions of units) Data Source: AutoCount data from Experian. The graph on the left provides an easily recognizable way to gauge the strength of the county market. It shows quarterly regis- trations based on a seasonally adjusted annual rate. These fig- ures are then indexed to SAAR sales figures for the U.S. new vehicle market. So just like in the national market, when the quarterly SAAR is above 17 mil- lion units, the county market is strong, 15 million is about av- erage, and below 13 million is weak. Quarterly registrations in the county reached a U.S. equivalent level of 17.7 million units in the Second Quarter of 2021 and fell to 15.0 million in the Third Quarter as inventories plummeted. COUNTY MARKET VS. U.S. San Diego County UP 26.7% U.S. UP 18.2% YTD 2021 thru September % Change In New Retail Market vs. Year Earlier Inventory issues had minimal impact on new light vehicle reg- istrations for most of the first nine months of this year. And up until that time, the county mar- ket posted a larger gain than the U.S. Registrations will trail year- earlier levels for the remainder of the year, however.
