Trent Williams, PLS UCLS Legislative Committee Chair Ensign Engineering, Senior Associate Trent started his surveying path as a high school intern with Ensign Engineering. At that time, he wanted to be a mechanical engineer. Fortunately for him, there were no internships available that would lead him closer to that goal. Ensign had a spot that he reluctantly took. After high school, he was hired and started drafting both surveys and civil plans in the Layton office until the opportunity arose to help out in the field. He immediately fell in love with surveying. Trent quickly enrolled at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and got licensed as soon as possible. In time, he worked for ECI and moved his family to Madison, Wisconsin, to support projects in the area. He became licensed there and heavily involved himself in the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors, chairing their standards and ethics committee for a time. For Trent, the time out of state gave him a unique perspective on what Utah and the UCLS do well and how we can adopt better examples from others to improve ourselves and our society. In late 2019, Trent and his family were ready to come back home. Their three kids were growing up and wanted to be near their cousins and grandparents. Ensign reached out at just the right moment, and within a month, they had moved back. Since then, he has led surveying in the Layton office, and since 2025, he has directed survey efforts company-wide as the service line director. Because Trent entered surveying through a high school internship, he is passionate about returning the opportunities he received. Each semester, he offers two internships to high school seniors. This has been a great success in helping find young professionals who want to enter surveying. He has been able to introduce surveying to many who would otherwise not know about this wonderful profession. Currently, Trent serves in advisory roles at nearby school districts and chairs the Legislative Committee. For the past four years, he has also moderated Wisdom Wednesday for the Land Surveyor, a bi-weekly book club for surveyors via Zoom. They have covered books from “Wattles” to “Evidence and Procedures” and even “The Pincushion Effect.” In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, camping and discussing surveying. As committee chair, Trent’s goal is to build bridges with the other professionals we often work with. Over the next few years, he hopes to bring the title groups, realtors, land use groups, UAC (recorders and surveyors) and many others to the table. He strongly believes that as we lead the way and invite collaboration, our image and reputation will grow. This was never clearer than during the 2026 Legislative Session, where he worked with many of those groups to unitedly shut down a bad bill — there were some strong feelings on both sides regarding the surveyors licensure bill passed this year. Ultimately, Trent wants surveyors to be known as the subject matter experts we are, to protect our profession and to clarify our responsibilities through code. Evan J. Wood, PLS UCLS Treasurer Focus Consulting, Senior Land Surveyor A Professional Land Surveyor, Evan has over 35 years of experience in surveying. He has completed hundreds of projects, spanning commercial, industrial, transportation, residential subdivisions and government agency projects. Evan is known for keeping at the forefront of survey technology. Clients appreciate his in-depth knowledge of survey practices and procedures, which equate to a savings of time and money for them. Evan is a member of the Utah Council of Land Surveyors, where he has served on various committees and held multiple leadership positions, including vice president (twice), secretary/treasurer (three times), and state chapter representative for the Salt Lake Utah Chapter. the chair for the UCLS Standards and Ethics Committee from 2016-2025 and currently serves as the treasurer for the UCLS state board.
