BY DAVID MORTENSEN, PLS, EDUCATION COMMITTEE CHAIR, UCLS Civil Science, Senior Surveyor Education Committee and Trig-Star Program Update Education Committee Update As the Education Committee chair for this year, my goal is to strengthen engagement between our organization and students, educators and early-career professionals. The committee will focus on expanding outreach efforts, supporting educational initiatives and providing valuable resources for professional development. Key priorities and initiatives for this year include: • Increasing participation in educational events and programs across the state • Strengthening partnerships with schools, universities and local chapters • Supporting scholarship and mentorship opportunities, including ongoing communication and updates through chapter meetings and events such as the Fall Forum • Promoting awareness of career pathways in land surveying, including participation in the State STEM Fest and encouraging involvement in local school STEM events An additional key effort is the Conference Auction. This is a major annual fundraiser for the organization. We are asking for support from surveyors across the state to donate quality items for the auction. We will be sending out communications and seeking additional opportunities to gather donations. We look forward to building on past successes while introducing new ideas to expand the reach and impact of our educational efforts. Trig-Star Program Update In my role as Trig-Star state coordinator, I will oversee the statewide coordination of the Trig-Star program, an annual high school mathematics competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) in partnership with local sponsors. The program is designed to recognize and challenge top mathematics students across the United States through a structured competition with awards at the local, state and national levels. The Trig-Star program serves several important purposes: • Building awareness of land surveying as a profession among high school students, career counselors and educators • Introducing students to the practical, real-world applications of mathematics within the surveying profession • Promoting the value and relevance of mathematics in real-world problem solving • Recognizing and honoring students who demonstrate exceptional mathematical ability This program also serves as a valuable public outreach and public relations opportunity for the surveying profession. It provides students, parents, teachers and the broader community with insight into the work of land surveyors, while highlighting the profession’s commitment to education, academic achievement and teaching excellence. Additionally, Trig-Star helps connect interested students with land surveying career pathways, including college degree programs. Students are encouraged to indicate their interest in learning more through the competition materials so they can receive additional information and resources. This year, my focus will include: • Increasing participation among high schools across the state • Strengthening communication and coordination with local chapters and sponsors • Ensuring a smooth and well-organized competition process • Promoting awareness of surveying careers through the program • Continuing to recognize and celebrate outstanding student achievement UCLS Foresights 20
